This has been a historic World Cup already for Egypt. They were invited to the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. However, the team was unable to make it due to the ship that was transporting them not making it out of the Mediterranean Sea due to a storm. They were invited back in 1934, but did not win a match. Egypt made it back to the World Cup two more times, in 1990 and 2018, but failed to win a match in either of those appearances either.
At this World Cup, Egypt got a massive draw against Belgium in its opening match. They followed that up with their first-ever win at the World Cup over New Zealand. Egypt secured one more draw against Iran to advance out of the group stage for the first time in history. Egypt’s greatest-ever player, Mo Salah, has risen to the occasion and scored a goal and delivered two assists in the group stage. It will be on Salah to deliver for his team in this massive knockout stage match.
Australia Preview
Australia has turned in another great performance at the World Cup. They made it out of the group in 2022, before losing to the eventual champions, Argentina, in the Round of 16. This year, they had another solid showing in the group, finishing in second place and advancing to the Round of 32. They have a chance to make it to the Round of 16 at back-to-back World Cups for the first time in the nation’s history. However, it has been a bit of a struggle for Australia to score goals, as they have been held goalless in each of their last two group stage matches.
Egypt vs. Australia Pick
Egypt has more of an attacking threat than Australia. Mo Salah, Mostafa Ziko and Omar Marmoush form a dangerous group of attacking players that should be able to create a couple of goals in this match. Egypt scored in every match of the group stage, but also conceded a goal in every match. All three of Egypt’s matches went over 1.5 total goals. That is why I’m backing that to happen again in this match. Egypt should create at least one goal in this match. That will cause Australia to be more aggressive going forward, which could lead to them scoring, or leave them exposed to another Egypt goal.
