The Rays arrive in Anaheim carrying the American League’s best record, a Boston sweep, and a six-game Southern California trip. Tampa Bay is 40-25 after Drew Rasmussen finished the Red Sox series with seven scoreless innings, 13 strikeouts, and 20 whiffs. The Angels sit at 27-42, though the last week has carried more life than their record suggests. Los Angeles beat the Dodgers 13-5, beat Houston 10-1, then walked off the Astros behind Jose Siri. Sebastián Rivero’s fractured hamate cuts into that momentum after his five-hit, six-RBI game, and the injury sheet still includes Jorge Soler, Yoán Moncada, Grissom, Frazier, and Jack Kochanowicz. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Angels vs. Rays prediction, preview
Shane McClanahan gives Tampa the cleanest baseball advantage on the board. He enters at 6-3 with a 2.85 ERA, 2.93 FIP, 1.10 WHIP, 59 strikeouts, and three homers allowed in 60 innings. His 23.9% strikeout rate, 8.5% walk rate, 44.3% ground-ball rate, and 0.45 HR/9 all point toward stable run prevention. The Statcast layer is not flawless, with an 89.2 mph average exit velocity allowed and 39% hard-hit rate, yet hitters still own only a .259 wOBA and .301 xwOBA against him. He already held this Angels lineup to one run over five innings May 31, and his Angel Stadium history sits at 11 scoreless innings, five hits, three walks, and 16 strikeouts.
Los Angeles has enough swing damage to keep this from becoming a lazy favorite play. Mike Trout owns 15 homers, a .391 OBP, .370 wOBA, 135 wRC+, 91.9 mph average exit velocity, 52.4% hard-hit rate, .415 xwOBA, and 21.2% barrel rate. Zach Neto adds 13 homers, 10 steals, a .213 ISO, .344 wOBA, and 12% barrel rate from the leadoff spot. Jo Adell brings a 90.7 mph average exit velocity, 45.3% hard-hit rate, and .331 xwOBA, even with uneven surface production. Logan O’Hoppe has only a 72 wRC+, but his 11.8% barrel rate keeps one-swing damage in play.
The team split still lands on McClanahan’s side. The Angels are hitting .230/.316/.387 with a .703 OPS against left-handed pitching, and their home split is worse at .219/.299/.347 with a .646 OPS. Their first-five profile is the strongest counter, since Los Angeles ranks ninth in first-five scoring at 2.71 runs per game and 2.94 at home. That number explains why Tampa Bay’s first-five moneyline is too expensive. It does not erase the matchup. McClanahan can miss enough bats, mute the home-run ball, and work around the one Trout or Neto swing before Tampa’s bullpen enters.
Sam Aldegheri brings the better story and the shakier betting profile. He is the first MLB pitcher born and raised in Italy, and his 2.25 ERA makes the spot look calmer than it is. The support numbers push harder the other way: 4.10 FIP, 5.69 xFIP, 15.7% strikeout rate, 9.8% walk rate, and 24.3% ground-ball rate. His Triple-A line was even louder, with a 7.24 ERA and 1.72 WHIP across nine starts at Salt Lake. Tampa can pressure that command immediately with Yandy Díaz at .331/.404/.536, a .407 wOBA, and 160 wRC+. Junior Caminero adds 14 homers, a .216 ISO, .379 wOBA, and 12.5% barrel rate, while Jonathan Aranda carries a .376 OBP, .362 wOBA, and 130 wRC+.
Rays vs. Angels pick, best bet
The bullpen and weather keep me away from the full-game under. Tampa Bay’s bullpen owns a 4.63 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 42 homers allowed, and 92 walks. The Angels’ bullpen sits at 4.84 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 35 homers allowed, and 139 walks. Bryan Baker and Kevin Kelly help Tampa late, but the middle bridge has enough traffic risk. Los Angeles has Sam Bachman and a few usable arms, though the season-long walk profile still invites crooked innings. Angel Stadium checks in around 80 degrees with light wind out, so the environment offers no serious under protection.
That shape makes the best bet an early Angels fade, not a full-game total or a Rays side. Tampa Bay’s moneyline, run line, and first-five prices ask bettors to pay for advantages already baked into the board. The sharper lane isolates McClanahan against a lineup with recent confidence, clear top-end power, and weak lefty/home splits. Los Angeles can still create late noise against Tampa’s bullpen, and Aldegheri gives the Rays a strong path to add on after the first turn.
The official play is Angels first-five team total under 1.5 at +105, with Tampa winning 5-3 behind McClanahan’s early control and later pressure against the Angels’ staff.
Best bet: Angels F5 TT u1.5 runs (+105) vs. Rays
