A nine-game MLB slate is on tap for Thursday. For those looking to cash in quickly on a bet, nothing makes more sense than an NRFI. With that being said, there’s more to this one than meets the eye. Some pitchers thrive early, while others take more time to get settled in than others. Which NRFI picks are worth a closer look on Thursday?

Phillies vs. Mets NRFI (-110)
Aaron Nola toes the slab tonight for the Phillies. As a whole, it’s been another middling season for the veteran. Over 161.1 innings (30 starts), he’s on the hook for a 4.69 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 165 strikeouts (9.2 K/9). However, the former All-Star has looked like a much improved pitcher over the past few weeks. Nola has notched a 2.47 ERA during his last eight outings. The right-hander comes into today’s matchup with a decent 70.0% NRFI rate. The Mets aren’t pushovers at the plate, but this is still a below-average lineup. They’re averaging 4.28 runs per game, ninth-fewest in baseball.
As for New York, Nolan McLean gets the nod this evening. It’s been a terrific season from the rookie, already one of the National League’s top arms. Through 166.2 innings (29 starts), he’s delivered a 3.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 184 strikeouts (9.9 K/9). The youngster has been nothing short of dominant in this spot. Over three career meetings with Philadelphia (19.1 IP), he’s allowed one earned run (0.47 ERA). In addition, the Phillies are averaging a National League-worst 4.05 runs per game on the road. Keeping that in mind, it’s difficult to envision an early offensive outburst.
Red Sox vs. Rangers NRFI (-125)
Boston’s rotation has been a massive strength this season. That’s due in large part to Thursday’s starter, Sonny Gray. The three-time All-Star is putting together a career year in Beantown. During 156.2 innings pitched (27 starts), he’s produced a 2.76 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 140 strikeouts (8.0 K/9). Gray has allowed a first inning run only twice over his last ten games. In comparison. the Rangers are averaging the league’s sixth-fewest runs per game (4.18). A major reason why is Texas’ .696 OPS against right-handed pitching, fifth-worst in baseball.
As for the home team, Tyler Alexander will get the start on Thursday. Spending most of this season out of the bullpen, he’ll likely serve as Texas’ opener. Through 68 appearances (four starts), the southpaw has recorded a 3.38 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 57 strikeouts (7.7 K/9). Alexander has only allowed three earned runs over his last 11.0 innings (2.45 ERA). This Red Sox lineup, while talented, hasn’t impressed as of late. They’ve scored 34 runs over their last ten games, fifth-worst in the big leagues during that stretch. Boston’s 25.00% YRFI rate is second-lowest in the majors.
