Familiarity breeds contempt, especially in Major League Baseball. Nowhere is that more evident than in the NL West, where the Dodgers (40-22) reign supreme. With that being said, there are several rivals itching for a chance to take down the defending champs. That includes the Diamondbacks (32-29), a sneaky playoff contender in the National League. Can Arizona earn an upset at home on Thursday, or will Los Angeles clinch another series win?

The Dodgers are favorites (-137) over the Diamondbacks, with the over/under set at nine runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Thursday’s showdown between Los Angeles and Arizona on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet

Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview

It’s no secret that the Dodgers wield one of the best starting rotations in baseball. However, Justin Wrobleski isn’t exactly a household name. The 25-year-old has enjoyed a breakout 2026 campaign, emerging as a key piece for Los Angeles. Over ten outings (nine starts) this season, the southpaw has recorded a 2.87 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 40 strikeouts (5.7 K/9). Despite a lack of whiffs, the youngster makes up for it with exceptional command (5.6 BB%). However, it’s safe to say he’s been somewhat fortunate so far. Wrobleski owns a 3.85 xERA and .254 xBA, all while topping out at around 94 MPH on his fastball. Still, those numbers aren’t too shabby for someone that started this season in the bullpen.

Tonight’s opponents, the Diamondbacks, have been in a rut as of late. The team has scored just 12 runs over their last five contests, worst in the majors during that stretch. To make matters worse, middle of the order bat Ketel Marte (back/hamstring) is questionable to suit up tonight. Regardless, it’s reasonable to expect a better showing at home on Thursday for the Snakes. After all, Arizona has recorded a National League-best .787 OPS against left-handed pitching. If there was ever a time for this crew to get back on track, it’s tonight.

As previously mentioned, Wrobleski doesn’t offer much in terms of velocity. However, he’s thrown a four-seam fastball on over half of his pitches (51%). That approach could be a mistake this evening in Phoenix. The D-backs own an impressive .452 slugging percentage against fastballs of 94 MPH or slower.

For the home team, it’ll be Ryne Nelson toeing the slab in this one. Despite a shaky month of April, the right-hander has begun to look like his old self. During his previous six appearances, he’s allowed 13 earned runs (2.95 ERA). A look under the hood provides more questions than answers for the veteran. A 5.05 xERA, 11.8% barrel rate and 29.9% ground ball rate all rank among the worst in baseball. However, he’s firmly inside the top 77th percentile in fastball velocity (96.2 MPH), chase rate (33.5%) and walk rate (6.8%). That ability to generate whiffs without compromising command is rare in non-elite starters.

It helps that Nelson has done surprisingly well throughout his career against the defending champs. Over eight meetings with the Dodgers, the 28-year-old has delivered a 2.72 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. As previously mentioned, the righty possesses terrific control. That’s key against a disciplined lineup; Los Angeles is averaging the league’s fifth-most walks per game (3.98). You can never bank on a quality start against a juggernaut, but Nelson won’t be intimidated by this matchup.

Best Bets: Diamondbacks ML (+114)

There’s no guarantee Arizona will pull off the upset, but there’s clear value here. 85% of all bettors are backing the Dodgers on the moneyline tonight. Despite their statistical difference, the talent gap between Wrobleski and Nelson isn’t high at all. In fact, the latter’s history of success against LA should give D-backs fans reason for optimism. At plus money, I’ll ride with the Snakes this evening.
