Rafael Jodar has shown he can be one of the next great Spaniards on clay. Jodar is only 19 years old, and this time last year, he was playing tennis at the University of Virginia. In a short stretch of time, he has proven to be a competitive ATP player. Jodar has risen to be the No. 42 player in the world in a short span of time. He recently won the Grand Prix Hassan II for his first-ever ATP title. That event took place in Morocco on clay. While it wasn’t a loaded field, Jodar proved how proficient he is on clay. He backed that up with a trip to the semifinals in Barcelona against a much better field, and his first-ever top-10 win over Alex de Minaur in the Round of 64 here in Madrid.
This time around, Jodar is taking on a fellow young phenom, Joao Fonseca. Fonseca is also 19 years old and has catapulted up the world rankings, currently sitting at No. 31. This should be an incredible match between two great young talents. However, the upside that Jodar has displayed on clay has been on another level. In front of his home crowd, Jodar should keep his special run going and take down Fonseca.
Coco Gauff to win 2:0 and Elena Rybakina to win 2:0 (+157)
Coco Gauff is playing at a very high level. She has surpassed Iga Swiatek to become the No. 3 player in the world. Gauff won her first match in Madrid 6-3, 6-0 in absolutely dominant fashion. Gauff is taking on Sorana Cirstea in this Round of 32 match. She is 2-0 in her career against Cirstea, with the two meeting as recently as Miami earlier this year. Gauff has been playing excellent clay tennis, dating back to her French Open title in 2025. She should keep her great run on clay going by taking down Cirstea in two sets.
Elena Rybakina is one of the two players in the world playing better than Gauff this year. Rybakina is playing the best tennis of her life, and that has not changed since pivoting to clay season. Rybakina just won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart in her first clay event of the season. She should keep that success rolling here in Madrid. Rybakina is taking on Zheng Qinwen in this Round of 32 match. She is 3-1 in her career against Zheng Qinwen, including a win earlier this year in Doha. Rybakina is on another level at the moment and should take care of business in straight sets in this match.
