Since the very beginning of its run on Prime Video, Invincible has had a serious body count. Surprising character deaths are part of the show’s DNA, pulling directly from the cult-classic comic books along the way.

Who died in Invincible Season 4 Episode 1?
All the way back in Season 1, Mark Grayson acted as a chaperone for astronauts visiting Mars. One of those astronauts, Rus Livingston, got left behind, but the rest of the team didn’t notice since a shape-sifting Martian took his place. A race of hive-mind parasites, the Sequids, used Rus as a host and proceeded to take over Mars. When Rus and the Sequids turned their sights towards Earth, Mark and the Guardians of the Globe went to stop them before they reached the surface.
Robot built a device that zapped the Sequid off of Rus, stopping the invasion before it began. However, Rus inadvertently smuggled one last Sequid to Earth in his stomach. He vomited it up, then it took control again. Over the next year or so, a mind-controlled Rus hid in the sewers while reproducing and possessing more hosts.
The Sequids finally reemerged in Season 4, Episode 1, taking over part of a city. Mark and the Guardians were able to break free all of the citizens who got mind-controlled, eventually whittling them down just to Rus again. The Sequids were about to break containment and get to the rest of the world, though. Instead of waiting for Bulletproof to bring him a device to zap the Sequid off of Rus, risking the rest of the face squids escaping, Mark killed Rus on the spot to cut off the hive mind’s connection for good.
Are the Sequids gone for good?
As far as we know, the sequids’ attempt to invade Earth is over. It didn’t end when Mark killed Rus, however.
When Rex – formerly known as Rudy, Robot’s human avatar – went into the sewers to take out some Sequids, he got knocked unconscious. While he was able to wake up and free the rest of the hosts, he didn’t escape unscathed. Rex went to hit the showers back at the Guardians’ headquarters, then vomited up one last Sequid. Monster Girl smushed it, ending the threat before Rex got enslaved.
What to expect in Invincible Season 4 moving forward
Admittedly, Rus is not the biggest character in Invincible‘s ensemble cast, so his death wasn’t much of a surprise. It did mark an important step in the titular superhero’s journey, though, since it showed he was willing to kill. After Mark let Angstrom live, only for him to come back and lay waste to Earth in the Invincible War, he isn’t going to let villains off so easy. Mark nearly killed Dr. David Anders, who transformed into Dinosaurus, before the Guardians arrived and talked him out of it. Oliver did the same when Mark was on the verge of killing Titan in Episode 3.
Cecil is worried about the toll that Rus’ death will have on Mark, and for good reason. The pressure of saving the world is getting to Mark, and he doesn’t even know that Conquest escaped yet – or that Eve is pregnant.
