What happened to Roman Anthony? Live injury updates for Red Sox vs. Guardians 9/2/25

UPDATE: Roman Anthony is dealing with oblique tightness, per the Red Sox.

During the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians, outfielder Roman Anthony exited the game due to an apparent injury.

The Red Sox star took a swing at the plate before grabbing at his lower back on the way back to the dugout. More details have not yet been made available.

At the time the young outfielder left the game, he was 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Red Sox held a 5-1 lead over the Guardians.

Video of his final at-bat and the subsequent walk to the dugout is below.

Anthony, a lefty-hitting rookie, slashes .292/.396/.463 with 48 runs, 32 RBI and eight home runs over his 71 games. Beyond the stat sheet, he’s a key member of this young Red Sox team and just signed an eight-year, $130 million contract extension with the team back at the beginning of August.

The Red Sox are 77-62 this season and have a 3.5-game lead in the AL Wild Card race as things currently stand.
