It’s been a strange WNBA season for the Seattle Storm and the New York Liberty. Both squads are on their way to the playoffs, but neither is completely satisfied.
After a 9-0 start, the Liberty have lost five of their last eight contests. A lot of that is due to the absence of Jonquel Jones. The former MVP is the anchor of their defense, and adds an overwhelming nature to their offense. Jones will be back this year, but in the meantime, New York is searching for answers.
Seattle is also on the hunt for answers. At 11-7, they’re firmly in the mix for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They have an elite two-way superstar in Nneka Ogwumike, a high-level offensive table-setter in Skylar Diggins, and a breakout star in Gabby Williams. However, with their star talent and strong role players, they had hoped for better by now.
The Liberty are 5.5-point favorites at home and are -225 on the moneyline on DraftKings Sportsbook. The total is set at 168.5 points. Let’s look at the best bets and predictions for this contest.
Storm vs. Liberty Prediction
On paper, this is a great matchup. The Liberty are capable of beating anyone so long as Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart are on the floor. They have capable role players, especially Natasha Cloud, who has been playing exceptionally well recently. It’s great for matching up with the Storm.
However, I don’t think that’s enough. Without Jones, they don’t have a Ogwumike stopper. They might have enough for Skylar Diggins, but little answer for both Diggins and Gabby Williams. Ezi Magbegor has a full license to control the paint. Seattle handled New York in their last matchup, and I think a repeat performance is in order.

This defense, plus the unstoppable nature of Nneka Ogwumike, makes me want to ride the Storm. I think Seattle has a lot more in the tank than they’ve shown this season. The Lynx and Liberty suddenly don’t look as inevitable for a Finals rematch. There’s blood in the water, and sharks are circling.
Sunday’s game is another chance for Seattle to prove it belongs in the contender’s circle. I fully expect it to seize the opportunity.
