UPDATE: Highly regarded catching prospect, Harry Ford, is being called up to the Mariners. Ford will only be formally promoted, though, if Garver goes on the IL.

Mitch Garver took a foul ball off the mask while catching in Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. He is done for the night with Cal Raleigh moving from DH to assume catching duties for the remainder of the game.

Garver has accrued 139 plate appearances this season, contributing three home runs, 13 runs, 16 RBI and three stolen bases. He’s slashing only .208/.317/.308 with an ISO of .100. Garver is a career .211 ISO hitter. He’s appeared in 20 games as a catcher, 17 as the DH and 18 as a pinch hitter.

If Garver misses time, it could have a slight effect on Raleigh, as he may play more behind the plate. Or, it could mean more plate appearances at DH. Regardless, we should be aware of the catching situation because Raleigh is having an amazing season so far.

In 343 plate appearances, Raleigh has contributed 32 home runs, 58 runs, 69 RBI and nine stolen bases. He’s slashing .277/.382/.658 with a whopping .380 ISO!
