Back on May 30th, Jobe was diagnosed with a Grade 1 flexor strain and placed on the 15-day IL. On Wednesday, June 11th, the Detroit Tigers announced that Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Jobe was selected by the Tigers with the third overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Entering the 2025 season, Jobe was considered the top pitching prospect. While not the burliest of pitchers at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Jobe averaged close to 97 mph on his fastball and had excellent secondary pitches with robust spin rates.
In 49 innings this season, Jobe had a strikeout rate of only 17.9%. As with most young pitchers, the walk rate was elevated at 12.4%. The swinging strike rate was 10% while the chase rate was 25.1%. He allowed seven home runs and 23 earned runs with a 5.11 FIP.
Jobe is only 22 years old, so he’s going to get better. Plenty of pitchers these days are undergoing Tommy John surgery, so it’s not a death knell for his career as it would have been a decade ago. That being said, it will likely be a few years before he returns to peak form.
