Justin Verlander last pitched on May 18th but only lasted four innings. His fastball averaged only 91.3 mph compared to the 94.1 mph on the season. Verlander seemed optimistic about making his next start after that contest, but on Wednesday, the Giants placed him on the injured list due to a pectoral issue.
If there are no complications or setbacks, Verlander would be lined up to face the San Diego Padres at home on Wednesday June 4th.
Through 52 innings this season, Verlander is posting a paltry 18.2% strikeout rate and 8.9% K/BB rate. The FIP is 4.78 and the 3.63 BB/9 is the highest rate since his rookie season.
There’s been no mention yet of who will fill that spot in the rotation over the next few weeks.
