Spain come into this contest on an absolute tear in international play, outscoring Andorra and Northern Ireland 10-1 over two friendlies. However, La Furia Roja suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia earlier this year before a 3-3 draw against Brazil, so it’s best to not read too much into the recent results given the competition. This Croatia team is experienced, talented and well connected. It comes into Euro 2024 with three straight wins, highlighted by a 2-1 victory in the last friendly against Portugal.
Aymeric Laporte will not be in the lineup for Spain, although the defender is apparently not dealing with a serious injury. Croatia has no injuries at the moment but there’s plenty of key contributors who are pushing the boundaries when it comes to age. Fitness is something to keep an eye on for that side.
There’s a lot to like about this Spanish attack but the back line might be a bit susceptible early in this tournament. Meanwhile, Croatia should be able to control the midfield and pick its spots with Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic. That’ll present a real challenge for Spain. As much as I want to take Croatia outright, Spain’s current form even against weaker competition makes me lean towards a draw.
