Neither of these teams have gotten off to a great start to their respective leagues so far this season, but I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt to the Reds here. Liverpool are undefeated in three Premier League games in the new campaign, but only one of those was a win while the other two results were draws. On the other hand, Atlético Madrid have played one more game, winning two out of four with a draw and a loss.
These teams met up in this exact same scenario almost a year to the day. On September 17th of 2025, Liverpool hosted Atlético Madrid in the League Phase of this tournament. It was the Reds who won that day, coming out with a 3-2 victory. Virgil van Dijk scored a late winner in what was a deserved win. Liverpool doubled them up in shots, had more shots on goal and won the possession battle. I could see this game going in a similar manner.
Although Atlético Madrid made it further in this competition a season ago, Liverpool were better in the League Phase. The Reds won six of their eight matches in that stage of the tournament to finish third in the table. Despite making it all the way to the semi-final, the Spanish side were not as good in the League Phase, winning only four of their eight matches to finish 14th in the table.
This game is at Anfield, under the lights on a weekday and it will be new manager Andoni Iraola’s first UCL match in charge of the Reds. I expect a great atmosphere, and ultimately a Liverpool win.
