The Vikings took care of the Giants in Week 1, but they were still home underdogs with the 49ers coming into town in Week 2. Sam Darnold ($5,200; 20.92 FPTS) threw a pair of touchdowns and finished with 268 passing yards and 32 rushing yards to lead his team to a second straight win to start the season.
Darnold’s biggest pass of the game was a 97-yard bomb to Justin Jefferson ($8,300; 26.3 FPTS), but unfortunately for Jefferson and the Vikings, he later left with a leg injury. Before leaving, he piled up 133 yards on just four catches. After the game, coach Kevin O’Connell said Jefferson is “hopefully day-to-day.”
Early in the third quarter, Darnold added a second passing score, finding Jalen Nailor ($3,900; 14.4 FPTS) for a 10-yard score.
The 49ers furiously tried to rally and ended up with good numbers overall, getting 319 passing yards from Brock Purdy ($6,100; 18.96 FPTS) and 110 receiving yards from Deebo Samuel Sr. ($6,800; 21 FPTS). The biggest star of the game for the 49ers, though, was Jordan Mason ($5,200; 20.4 FPTS), who continued to shine with Christian McCaffrey on IR.
We highlighted Mason as a good fantasy play, and he delivered another big game even in a tough matchup with the Vikings. Even though his salary is sure to jump next week, I still think “he’s set up to feast in Kyle Shanahan’s elite run offense,” as I wrote yesterday.
In the end, the Vikings defense and running game did just enough for Minnesota to hold on for a 23-17 victory. Next week, they’ll look to stay undefeated at home against the Texans while the 49ers play on the road again in a divisional matchup against the Rams.
