Is Jordan Mason a good play in fantasy this week?

Updated:

By: Zach Thompson

The short answer is YES!

Third-year RB Jordan Mason ($5,200) is not only an awesome play for this week when the 49ers take on the Vikings, but he’ll be the team’s top option in the backfield for the next four weeks since Christian McCaffrey will land on IR and miss at least the first five weeks of the season.

Leading into the 49ers’ season opener last Monday night against the Jets, it looked like CMC would be able to play through his Achilles tendinitis and calf injury. However, he was a surprise inactive, opening the door for Mason to step up.

Mason rose to the occasion, taking his 28 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown and hauling in his only target for five more yards.

Mason is lined up to start the next two road games against the Vikings and Rams and then at home against the Patriots and Cardinals before CMC is eligible to return.

This week’s matchup against the Vikings will be a tough one since Minnesota has been stout against the run over the last few seasons. However, Mason’s value still makes him a play with too much upside to ignore.

When McCaffrey does eventually return, the two backs could be an elite timeshare, or Mason may return to his role as a backup. Either way, for the next four weeks, he’s set up to feast in Kyle Shanahan’s elite run offense.

This week, Mason’s 49ers are 4.5-point road favorites in Minnesota and Mason is -180 to find the end zone, the shortest odds of any player in that game. If you think he’ll go off again, Mason is +245 to reach 100 rushing yards and +310 to score multiple touchdowns.
