Longtime Dallas Cowboys insider, and the man Mike Golic Jr. describes as the “Jerry Jones whisperer,” David Helman joined Tuesday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss CeeDee Lamb’s new deal and the contract situations for other Cowboys stars.
While Lamb has reportedly agreed to a four-year, $136 million contract extension, negotiations seemed to drag out longer than people anticipated. However, as history has proven, the Cowboys have traditionally been slow to sign their stars. When Mike Golic Jr. questioned the Cowboys’ long-drawn-out tactics, David Helman responded, “I think at this point you just have to say this is the way the Cowboys prefer to do business.”
He further explained that if a player’s new contract is within market value, the Cowboys move fast, but with a signing that will reset the market, they are glacial. Further, Helman believes that the Cowboys’ approach is not a negotiation tactic but a reflection of their stubbornness as a franchise. A similar lengthy process occurred when it was time for Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and even former Cowboy Dez Bryant to negotiate their contract extensions.
With the Lamb contract extension in the rearview, the attention now shifts once again to Prescott, who could potentially be testing the free-agent market after this upcoming season. Helman tells the Golics that he expects Prescott to be a key target for teams, so much so that it will incite a bidding war. Negotiations for Prescott’s new deal will likely be equally protracted, setting the stage for a dramatic off-season as teams fiercely compete for his services.
Despite the buzz surrounding Cowboys’ contract negotiations, Helman offers a broader perspective on why players embrace the spotlight of Big D. He suggests that the allure of playing for the Cowboys, with benefits like no state income tax and the marketability of the Dallas Cowboys brand, often outweighs the drama of contract talks.
The Dallas Cowboys open the season against the Cleveland Browns, where they are a 2.5-point underdog at DraftKings Sportsbook.
