Is Tom Brady right that it is a “tragedy” the way rookie quarterbacks are pressed into service so early?
NFL analyst Chris Simms joined Mike Golic Sr. and Mike Golic Jr. on Thursday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss Brady’s take on the way young NFL quarterbacks are being developed.
Brady, the famed former Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback and now NFL analyst, appeared on the Stephen A. Smith Show to share his outlook on quarterback development in today’s NFL. Brady expressed that it is a “tragedy” that rookies are forced into starting roles when they have not had the chance to develop. He referenced his journey of working up through the quarterback depth chart in his early days as a New England Patriot.
What Brady experienced early in his career does not reflect the journey of the modern-day NFL rookie quarterback. Senior alluded to three rookie quarterbacks who have already been tabbed to be Week 1 starters — Chicago’s Caleb Williams, Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Denver’s Bo Nix. Simms praised the three rookie QB1s, expressing that they were his top three quarterbacks heading into the draft.
Additionally, he gives more context to Brady’s comments, sharing that it is a much different time than when Brady entered the league. NFL franchises cannot afford to wait and be patient for quarterbacks to develop. He spotlights the game’s simplicity now compared to the past and the talent. The things that quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen can do with their arms and legs differ from the quarterbacks of yesteryear.
Williams (-120), Daniels (+200) and Nix (+320) are the three favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook to lead rookies in passing yards this season, and also have three of the four best odds for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award on DraftKings Sportsbook with Williams the favorite at +135, followed by Daniels with the second-best odds at +475 and Nix the fourth-best odds at +1000. It should be noted that Nix is climbing thanks to his stellar preseason play.
Meanwhile, GoJo asked which second-year quarterback Simms likes more to take the leap this coming season — Bryce Young and Will Levis. Simms sided with Levis, citing the Titans QB’s physical attributes controlling the football and his underrated ability to be mobile.
