Earlier this week, LeBron James was named as one of the two Team USA flag bearers, having been nominated by USA Basketball teammate Steph Curry. Now we know who will be joining him on Friday as a flag bearer for the U.S. at the Opening Ceremony — tennis star Coco Gauff.
The 20-year-old Gauff is currently the No. 2-ranked women’s tennis player in the world, behind only Iga Swiatek. Gauff has seven career singles titles, including the 2023 U.S. Open, in addition to nine doubles titles.
Gauff becomes the first U.S. tennis player to have the honor of being a flag bearer. She is also the youngest flag bearer in Team USA history. The reveal was made this morning on the Today Show on NBC. Chris Eubanks, who has known Gauff since they were young, noted that Gauff took the world by storm last year, including that first grand slam title. He said she showcased to the world how special a tennis player and person she is and because she’s so special she has the honor being a flag bearer.
Gauff released her own statement on X, thanking her teammates and fellow athletes for bestowing upon her such an honor.
Olympic tennis action will kick off on Saturday and Gauff currently has +500 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook to take home the gold, once again only behind Poland’s Swiatek who is the favorite at -190.
