For the second time this season, Christian Yelich is headed to the 10-day injured list. The Brewers announced the move prior to their game Wednesday afternoon and it comes on the heels of Yelich being removed from Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over the Cubs. Gary Sanchez will take Yelich’s spot on the 26-man roster. The backstop hasn’t played for Milwaukee since suffering a calf ailment back in late June.
Yelich is in the midst of an amazing campaign despite his trips to the IL. In 73 games and 315 plate appearances, the All-Star is slashing .315/.406/.504 with a .392 wOBA and a 156 wRC+. It’s by far the best Yelich has looked since he was consistently competing for MVP awards a half-decade ago.
However, this issue could be season-ending, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. Yelich will see a spine specialist on Thursday to discuss next steps, including the possibility of surgery.
Yelich’s absence leaves a huge hole in the Brewers’ lineup, though it is worth noting that rookie Jackson Chourio has been on fire the past 30 days, hitting .313 with a 142 wRC+. Milwaukee currently owns a five game lead in the National League Central. As recently as July 3, that lead was seven games. The Brewers (-475) remain lofty favorites to win their division on the DraftKings Sportsbook, yet the Cardinals (+500) and Pirates (+2500) are looming. Yelich’s injury opens that door a little more.
