The Washington Commanders are trading defensive end Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers, per Ian Rapoport. Washington is getting back a 2024 third-round pick. So far, at the 2023 trade deadline, the Commanders have traded away Young and Montez Sweat for a second and third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Young has played in seven games this season. He has 15 total tackles with 12 solos and three assists. Young has five sacks and should slot into the San Francisco defensive line opposite of Nick Bosa. Washington goes from having one of the best defensive lines in the league to a rebuilding one. San Francisco’s defense gets that much stronger, and Young should make an immediate impact after the bye week.
Washington may have a rough time slowing down opposing offenses for the rest of this season. Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen will still be playing up the middle, but the fill-ins on the end could rotate. James Smith-Williams, Efe Obada and Casey Toohill are expected to be involved in trying to fill-in the large gaps left by Sweat and Young.
