The San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Washington Commanders in Week 17 of the NFL season. Star running back Christian McCaffrey has spent some time on the sidelines during the game and has been shown getting work done on his calf/ankle region. Elijah Mitchell has been getting the running back work in the offense in his absence.
Before getting hurt, McCaffrey had carried the ball 14 times for 64 yards. He brought in four of his five targets for an additional 27 yards. Mitchell has 65 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. This injury could be bigger than this game, as McCaffrey had cemented his name in the MVP conversation. It’s already difficult to win the game as a non-QB, but CMC had 1,395 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns 537 receiving yards and seven additional touchdowns heading into this week. McCaffrey would not only be a big loss this week but if his injury lingers, it could be a problem as San Francisco eyes the playoffs.
Christian McCaffrey injury updates
Update: Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that McCaffrey could have a calf strain. For now, he doesn’t believe that the injury is too serious. With the No. 1 seed locked in, San Francisco would likely rest him next week anyway.
Update: McCaffrey is questionable to return in Week 17 and has been cited as dealing with a calf injury.
