It’s official: A.J. Brown is making his much-anticipated return for the Patriots. It couldn’t come at a more important time for New England, taking on the rival Jets at home. In this AFC East grudge match, can fantasy football managers trust the superstar following a five-week hiatus? Let’s break down whether you should start or sit Brown in Week 6.
Should you start AJ Brown in fantasy football on Sunday?
It’s been an uneven month for New England’s offense. After lackluster showings against the Steelers and Jaguars, this scoring attack has bounced back in dominant fashion. The team has scored a combined 74 points during wins against the Bills and Raiders. Even more important, quarterback Drake Maye has looked like his old self. During that time, last season’s MVP runner-up has thrown for 643 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. Maye has gotten plenty of different receivers involved, including offseason pickup Romeo Doubs. Slot specialist DeMario ‘Pop’ Douglas has also made an impact.
With that being said, neither of those names possess Brown’s talent. Upon his return to the starting lineup, he’ll serve as the undisputed WR1 in this offense. Granted, it remains to be seen just how much the Patriots will play their high-priced acquisition on Sunday. Keep in mind, New England has a Thursday Night Football contest with the Bears up next. Facing a short week, head coach Mike Vrable might play it safe.
Still, a weapon of Brown’s caliber can make a difference at less than 100%. Keep in mind, the three-time Pro Bowler is averaging an impressive 15.3 yards per reception throughout his eight-year career. To boot, he’s never had much trouble finding the end zone. If AJB is on the field, there’s always the threat of a big play.
That’ll be the challenge for an underrated Jets secondary. Gang Green is allowing just 6.1 yards per pass attempt, third-best in the NFL. New York has surrendered the eighth-fewest fantasy points to opposing wide receivers as well. However, those numbers alone aren’t enough to fade one of the league’s premier pass catchers. It’ll likely take some time for New England’s top dog to get into a groove. Still, he’s got more than enough talent to deliver WR2/high-end flex fantasy production. Start AJ Brown this weekend, albeit with somewhat limited expectations.
