The AFC North has been known for some ugly battles in recent years. In Week 6, we could be in for yet another one as the Baltimore Ravens – without Lamar Jackson – head to Cleveland for a matchup against the Browns.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET in Cleveland. Here’s a preview, prediction and pick for Ravens vs. Browns in NFL Week 6.
Ravens vs. Browns prediction, preview
Baltimore enters this matchup with a 4-1 record, which is particularly impressive after the team survived an overtime scare on Monday Night Football last week. Operating with Tyler Huntley at quarterback while Lamar Jackson (ankle) was sidelined, the Ravens scored 30 points and largely played some quality football on the day. Huntley is once again the starter this week, but that’s not quite as scary now given that he went 24-for-32 with 201 yards and a touchdown last time out. Of course, the absence of Jackson means the upside of the offense is capped a bit – don’t expect the Ravens to look like their typical selves that are fifth in scoring and sixth in EPA/play. They are, however, fourth in EPA/rush and will surely lean on Derrick Henry a little more than usual since the halfback has 476 rushing yards and seven touchdowns already, defying the age cliff at his position. Zay Flowers is still the top target for Huntley, but it’s worth noting that rookie Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) is also likely to get back on the field after a week of full practices. It’s imperative the defense shows up to insulate a potential downtick in offensive production, though. Baltimore ranks 19th in opponent scoring with 23.8 PPG allowed, also falling 16th in defensive EPA/play. They’ve largely been gashed via big plays, though, seeing as that the defense is fourth in success rate allowed.
The Browns weren’t expected to be a good team this year, but to their credit, they’re actually 3-2 to this point. It hasn’t been pretty at all, but this roster has managed to win largely on the back of its defense, holding opponents to 24 points or fewer in each of the last four games. Cleveland sits 13th in scoring allowed and 15th in EPA/play allowed, so this has been a solid unit overall. However, they’re better against the pass than the run, slipping all the way to 27th in EPA/rush allowed to opponents. Offensively, the picture is ugly. The browns are 27th in points for and 24th in EPA/play. Deshaun Watson has played surprisingly well with 1,010 passing yards and seven touchdowns to one interception, managing games just enough to keep his team in it. Rookie wideout Denzel Boston has 330 yards and three scores on 16 receptions and has flashed alongside fellow rookie KC Concepcion (18 REC, 149 YDS), while Harold Fannin (18 REC, 157 YDS, 3 TD) remains a standout at tight end. The run game has been largely abysmal, though, with Quinshon Judkins rushing for 221 yards and one touchdown on 73 attempts. Cleveland has only scored more than 23 points once this season, so the ceiling of this group seems pretty low as currently constructed.
Ravens vs. Browns pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Ravens as a -3 favorite on the road with -166 odds to win on the Moneyline. The Browns are a +140 home underdog to win outright with the game total set at 39.5 combined points.
This total is very low, but frankly, the under still holds some appeal here. Baltimore will likely turn to the ground game plenty here given a tough matchup through the air – Cleveland ranks fifth in EPA/dropback allowed – which will mean slower pace of play and fewer scoring opportunities. Granted, Henry should roll against this front seven with 20+ carries and a touchdown or two. Even still, the Ravens will see some drives stall out with Huntley under center. On the opposite side, it’s difficult to see the Browns getting much going on offense since they’ve looked so underwhelming over the first five weeks. They’ll likely get into the end zone at some point, but this is also a unit that hasn’t provided a ton of upside. The Ravens’ defense is fairly strong and brings a clear edge over the opposing offense, and to be fair, it feels like Watson is bound to collapse at some point after largely playing respectable football so far.
This has the makings of one of those low-scoring AFC North showdowns, so even with the low total, I still like the under in this spot.
Best Bet: Under 39.5 points (-108)
