A surprise med evac (make that quit?), a grueling challenge, hidden advantages and a third straight blindside. Episode 3 of Survivor 51 had a little bit of everything. During what can only be described as a chaotic pre-merge, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Jeff Probst and company have in store for us this week.
What’s on tap for the 17 remaining castaways? Below, we’ll recap all the twists and turns from Wednesday’s fourth episode, titled “That’s the Magic of Survivor”, along with revealing who was voted out.
Survivor 51 Episode 4 Recap
Toka in Turmoil
The Brady-Devin alliance fell short, whiffing on a chance to take out Kilby. Instead, it was former ally Patt that saw her torch snuffed. Kilby is laughing at them, saying that they’re going to “feel like a fool tonight.” Brady calls himself a ‘dummy’, upset at Carter and Lewis (his former “brodies”) for swinging the vote towards the underdogs.
Jelly is also in distress, upset that she’s already lost one of her closest allies in Patt. Keep in mind, the most recent vote-out was the only other person who was aware of Jelly’s hidden immunity idol. Not even Helicopter Alliance co-conspirator Devin is aware, due in part to his loose lips. If used right, the advantage could lead to yet another power shift on Toka.
Tribe Swap!
A tranquil morning is interrupted by a shocking twist. There’s a boat waiting for everyone on Savu and Toka. It’s great news for those on the bottom, while players in a position of power are dreading any potential shake-up in the game. Such a vague message can only mean one thing at this early point of the season: tribe swap.
Waiting for our players upon arrival is none other than Jeff, here to deliver the big news. Unlike more recent seasons, it’s an old-school swap: drop your buffs and switch from two tribes to three. Originally, this twist was planned for 18 players to be split up into groups of three. However, Rob’s departure means there will be one undermanned segment of five. The new tribes are the following:
Dina: Christian, Eric, Kilby, Linnea, Lewis and Sharonda
Toka: Brady, Carter, Kristin, Maggie, Mike and Thien An
Savu: Alexis, Devin, Jelly, Jenna and Ori
Starting Over on Dina
The newest tribe already has its fair share of drama. With just two original Toka members, Kilby isn’t in a great spot. He unleashes on his old teammates, especially when it comes to his ongoing feud with Devin. It seems like the rest of this six-member group is sympathetic. That’s especially true of Eric, who already sees a “genuine soul” and potential ally. Almost immediately, the two agree to have each other’s backs going forward.
On the flip side, Lewis is feeling a bit sick. It’s not a great start socially considering he and Kilby are in the minority. Eric seems ready to cut the Irishman loose if Dina drops its first immunity challenge. With that being said, this new alliance becoming a bit too obvious. Kilby is concerned that the new Lover Boys alliance is a wee bit obvious to the other members of his new tribe. His premonition is correct; the other former Savu members are worried about a new duo forming.
Kristin Takes on Toka
Kristin is the odd person out on Toka, made up primarily of OG members of the tribe. Still, it’s not as if this crew was voting in lockstep. Brady and Mike were on the outs last time, while Carter, Maggie and Thien An voted together. Keeping that in mind, the newest member of the tribe holds a bit of power…if she plays her cards right.
Almost immediately, Kristin makes herself invaluable. She’s pointing out different fruits to her fellow players, making them feel empowered while offering encyclopedic knowledge of the jungle. For a player that appeared ‘swap screwed’, it’s a quick way to ingratiate one’s self. Talking to Carter, someone that didn’t vote with Kristin in Episode 2, is another attempt to gain social capital. He’s not quite buying it, viewing her strategy as an effort to “butter me up.”
Mike is also making an effort to branch out socially, making amends with his old Toka adversaries. Thien An isn’t buying it, telling Maggie that she views him as “bogus.” His attempt at networking has fallen flat on its face, at least with those two. “I think Mike wants to play Survivor” Thien An stated, “but right now he’s playing survival.” With that being said, Carter would prefer to take out Kristin.
Helicopter Alliance Stranglehold on Savu
Alexis is in a rough spot, since she and Ori are the only original members of Savu. However, she doesn’t realize that the latter is locked into the previously mentioned Helicopter Alliance. Alexis tries making some inroads with Jenna, informing her that Devin told old Savu that she shouldn’t be trusted.
Jenna, much as she did in Episode 1, hopes to use this newfound information to her advantage. She spills the beans to Devin in an effort to stay strong with the Toka Three. Predictably, the actor from LA isn’t buying her performance. He’s been gunning for Jenna all season; does it make sense to switch from the plan just because of a tribe swap? Meanwhile, Jelly and Ori are resuming their showmance, although the chemistry is lukewarm at best. They both like lasagna, she’s been single three years, Devin is attempting to play matchmaker…it’s not the most compelling content.
Filler Challenge
At long last, we finally get to this week’s immunity challenge. Only one of the three tribes competing will go to tribal council, while whichever group finishes first wins a Survivor coffee kit. Second place just gets regular iced coffee, a decent consolation prize.
In this week’s challenge, tribes are tasked with taking a bucket of water from the ocean and filling it up. The water inside of the bucket is then tossed from player to player, each one forced to stand in place. Whatever is left by the end of the relay is dumped into a container. Once raised to the brim with water, the container will drop a ball. Then, two members of each tribe will attempt to navigate said ball through an elaborate, circular maze.
Dina is first to fill up the container, moving on to the maze. Toka isn’t far behind, while Savu struggles to get some momentum. Christian and Linnea seem like they’re starting to pull ahead, but a slip-up destroys their momentum. Soon after, Savu finishes with their buckets and jumps into the puzzle portion of the challenge. However, it’s Dina’s duo that holds firm and pulls off a commanding victory. That leaves us with a duel between Toka and Savu. Although the ball popped out at the very end, Jeff confirms that the former tribe finished their maze. As a result, it’ll be the new-look Savu sending someone home.
Alexis vs. Jenna
Devin, always one for dramatics, calls Alexis and Jenna “lambs to the slaughter.” Regardless, his in-game enemy is still attempting to mend fences. Jenna tells Devin and Jelly that the three could help each other by keeping Toka together. Then, they could retain control on this brand new tribe. In a last ditch effort, she’s attempting to pin the vote on the scheming Alexis. The latter is still trying to buddy up with her fellow outcast, likening Devin’s group to the cool kids in school. Alexis is looking for a display of trust from Jenna, asking for her shoes as collateral.
Jelly seems receptive to Jenna’s pitch for this vote, viewing Alexis as a bigger threat that’s throwing her name around. Once again, Devin still needs some convincing. It’ll be up to this pair of allies (and Ori) during tonight’s vote.
Jelly attempts to play things cool at tribal council, downplaying her bond with Ori. She claims that his motivations, along with Alexis’, are a bit of an unknown to the old Toka members. Alexis is trying to prove that she isn’t “chaos”, preaching stability to whoever decides to vote with her tonight. Ultimately, that plea is rewarded. Four votes go towards Jenna, making her the fourth person eliminated from Survivor 51.
