One of the more glowing reviews comes from Zaki Hasan of the San Francisco Chronicle. He writes that “the film is certainly a testament to nature’s enduring majesty and mystery, it’s just as much a monument to Brad Pitt’s movie-star magnetism, undiminished after more than three decades perched atop Hollywood’s A-list.” IGN’s Jim Vejvoda had added praise for the film’s true headliner. “The lead actor in the new survival drama Heart of the Beast possesses rugged, movie star good looks, does almost all his own stunts, and delivers an understated, deeply moving performance.” he writes. “Brad Pitt is also in this movie.”
Still, there are some overtly negative critiques for Heart of the Beast, with most of the ire targeted at a routine plot. Avi Offer of NYC Movie Guru proclaimed the film “a tedious, undercooked and intermittently thrilling survival tale with breathtaking scenery and a dog that steals the show.” Amber Wilkinson from Eye for Film said “imagine all the Terrible/Awesome Clichés That Could Happen In The American Wilderness and construct a mental bingo card… Spoiler warning: There’s a pretty good chance you’re going to get a full house.”
