Washington opens Friday’s series at Sutter Health Park with a 48-49 record and MLB’s highest run total. Those 516 runs have produced only a plus-seven differential because Washington’s bullpen repeatedly surrendered late leads. The Nationals hit 13 homers across their final six games before the All-Star break. The Athletics are 41-55 after nine consecutive losses and three wins across their last 20 games. They scored only two runs across their final three games before the break. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the Washington Nationals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Athletics vs. Nationals prediction, preview
Cade Cavalli has five wins, four losses, a 3.83 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts through 98.2 innings. He has walked 32, allowed eight homers, and carries a 4.16 xERA. Cavalli uses a 96.9 mph four-seamer alongside his curveball, sinker, sweeper, and vulnerable changeup. His last five starts produced 89.4 mph contact, a 45.9% hard-hit rate, and 20.5% whiffs per swing. Gage Jump owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 48 strikeouts, and 15 walks through 48.2 innings. Jump has a 6.20 home ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and .908 opponent OPS. His last two starts yielded 92.1 mph contact and a 56.7% hard-hit rate across 30 balls in play. Washington’s bullpen posted a 5.84 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and eight homers allowed over its final six games. The Athletics’ relievers carried a 7.09 ERA and 1.57 WHIP while allowing 21 runs across 26.2 innings.
Washington’s .268/.345/.442 split and .787 OPS against lefties rank first, with 34 homers across 1,077 plate appearances. James Wood owns a .279/.410/.575 line with 28 homers, 64 RBI, 89 runs, and 15 steals. His 95 mph average exit velocity, 59.9% hard-hit rate, and 22.7% barrel rate support every bit of that production. Wood hit .441/.612/1.176 with seven homers, 15 walks, and five strikeouts during July. His last 10 balls in play averaged 92.9 mph, including 60% hard contact and a 111.9 mph maximum. CJ Abrams has 20 homers, 15 steals, and a .862 OPS. Abrams’ latest 10 balls in play averaged 93.2 mph, with 60% hard contact and a 14.6-degree launch angle. Curtis Mead has a .843 OPS, 17 homers, and a .868 OPS against lefties. Mead homered twice during his latest contact window, although his other batted balls averaged only 81.8 mph.
The Athletics’ strongest scoring path attacks Cavalli with their four confirmed left-handed hitters. Lefties own a .781 OPS against Cavalli, while righties sit at .581. Carlos Cortes leads off before Tyler Soderstrom bats third and Shea Langeliers bats fourth. Soderstrom’s eight balls in play since returning averaged 96.8 mph, with 62% hard contact and a 50% sweet-spot rate. Langeliers’ latest 10 averaged an extraordinary 101.4 mph, with 80% hard contact and two barrel-window events. Cavalli’s last two starts produced only 16.4% whiffs per swing and a 24.6% chase rate. The Athletics still struck out in 28.6% of their final 210 plate appearances while walking only 4.8%. Their 133 balls in play produced a 3% barrel-window rate and 57.9% ground-ball rate. Lawrence Butler generated no barrels, a 70% ground-ball rate, and a minus-12.9-degree launch angle during his latest window.
Nationals vs. Athletics pick, best bet
Friday’s forecast calls for 88 degrees, clear skies, and nine-mph wind blowing toward left field. That wind favors Mead, Langeliers, and other right-handed pull hitters while helping Wood’s opposite-field power. James Hoye’s 18 plate assignments have averaged 9.89 runs and 2.5 homers, with overs finishing 10-7. His 63.02% strike rate provides no meaningful protection for Jump’s deteriorating fastball. Both bullpens received complete rest during the All-Star break, removing any immediate availability concerns. The Athletics also changed pitching coaches after dismissing Scott Emerson and promoting Dan Hubbs. Brent Rooker moved to the 60-day injured list, while Nick Kurtz and Zack Gelof remain unavailable. Tommy White debuts at first base against former LSU teammate Dylan Crews, although his ninth-place assignment limits his opportunities.
Washington costs -135 on the moneyline, while the -1.5 run line returns +120. The run line leaves a strong offensive handicap exposed to Washington’s 27 blown saves and unstable bullpen. Over 10 requires substantial Athletics production against Cavalli, whose ground-ball ability can strand this diminished lineup. Washington’s team total isolates Jump’s home problems, recent contact deterioration, and an exhausted Athletics pitching structure. The Nationals project for 6.3 runs, with six available through concentrated power or extended bullpen exposure.
Best bet: Nationals team total over 5.5 at +100, playable through -115.
Projected score: Nationals 7, Athletics 4.
Best bet: Nationals TT o5.5 runs (+100) at Athletics
