San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 7/08/26

Arizona and San Diego enter the rubber game at Petco Park tied at 45-46, which gives this one more weight than the records suggest. The Diamondbacks opened the series with an 8-0 win, then San Diego answered 4-1 on Tuesday. That Padres win did not come from sustained offense. Tatis doubled, Merrill singled, Sheets walked, and Cronenworth hit the three-run homer. San Diego scored all four runs in the first inning and nothing after that. Arizona had its own opening, loading the bases with nobody out in the first. The D-backs got one run, then watched the inning die. They finished with five hits, three double plays, and two rally-killers from Arenado. That Tuesday shape is the whole handicap: Arizona can create traffic, but getting to four runs at Petco is a different ask. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview

King gives San Diego the best stabilizing piece. He is scheduled opposite Cabrera, with King at 5-7 and a 3.52 ERA while Cabrera enters 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA. King’s contact card fits Petco: 87.7 mph average EV, 34.4% hard-hit, .288 wOBA, .329 xwOBA, and 8.5% barrels. He is not untouchable, especially if Marte and Carroll get him into stretch work early, but he is the cleaner arm by a lot. Cabrera brings the blowup risk on the other side. His small MLB sample has a 90.7 mph average EV, 43.2% hard-hit, .378 wOBA, .381 xwOBA, .517 xSLG, 9.1% barrels, 16.7% K rate, and 6.41 xERA. That is the case for Padres runs. It is also why laying -144 on the moneyline feels like paying for the obvious side at the worst number.

Arizona’s top four can absolutely make this uncomfortable. Marte doubled Tuesday and owns the loudest bat in the order, with 91.7 mph average EV, 46.3% hard-hit, .376 xwOBA, and 11.4% barrels. Carroll gives the D-backs another impact left-handed swing and a speed element, while Perdomo can drag at-bats long enough to raise King’s pitch count. Moreno went 2-for-4 in the loss and gives Arizona its best contact piece behind the main bats. The problem starts when those innings need finishing. Arenado went 0-for-4 with six left on base Tuesday. Pavin Smith, McCann, and Tawa do not give the bottom third enough force. Arizona can score two or three through Marte, Carroll, and Moreno. Four requires the lower half to cash traffic against King, then beat a good Padres bullpen.

San Diego’s offensive case is cleaner against Cabrera, but still not clean enough for a full Padres tax. Tatis has the best power-speed profile in the game, and his 91.7 mph average EV, 52.9% hard-hit, .350 xwOBA, and 11.2% barrels all fit Cabrera’s contact problem. Machado gives the middle another hard-contact lane, Merrill keeps the top moving, and Sheets/Cronenworth can turn one walk into three runs. Tuesday showed that exact version. It also showed the limit. San Diego scored four in the first and then went quiet for seven innings. The Padres have the better starter and the better matchup offense, but they just lost nine of 10 before Tuesday. That keeps Padres team total over 4.5 live at plus money, while keeping the moneyline behind the Arizona-specific under.

Diamondbacks vs. Padres pick, best bet

The bullpen and park both support the same read. San Diego got four scoreless innings from its bullpen Tuesday, with Brito getting the sixth-inning double play and Miller closing a perfect ninth for his 23rd save. Arizona’s bullpen is capable enough to keep Padres -1.5 from becoming the main play, especially if Cabrera exits before the game gets ugly. Petco also helps trim the cheap damage. San Diego is sitting in the low 70s before first pitch, then cooling into the upper 60s during the game. That is not a warm carry night. The run-scoring path needs walks, doubles, and clean sequencing. That setup hurts Arizona more because King gives fewer free-contact innings than Cabrera.

The Padres are the more likely winner, but -144 is too expensive for a team with this recent offensive shape. Full-game under 8.5 is playable, but Cabrera’s hard-contact profile can wreck it in one inning. Padres team total over 4.5 at +105 is the aggressive add, because Cabrera has not shown enough miss or contact control.

The best bet is still cleaner: Diamondbacks team total under 3.5 (-105), playable to -115. King, Petco, San Diego’s late-game arms, and Arizona’s lower-order conversion problem all point to the same result.

Projected score: Padres 5, Diamondbacks 3.

Best bet: Diamondbacks TT u3.5 runs (-105) at Padres
