San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks prediction, pick for MLB on Monday 7/06/26

Arizona and San Diego open a four-game Petco Park series with the same record and the same urgency. The Diamondbacks are 44-45, 17-25 away, and still second in the NL West. The Padres are 44-45, 23-21 at home, and coming off a 5-2 win that ended an eight-game skid. Arizona just dropped a 3-2 game to Milwaukee after Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll produced back-to-back doubles, while San Diego finally got lift from Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Manny Machado against Los Angeles. That makes this a fascinating pre-break fork: Arizona has the steadier recent run-prevention profile, while San Diego has the louder home power path. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview

Brandon Pfaadt enters with a dangerous run shape: 1-1, 5.40 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 43.1 IP, 43 H, 33 K, 18 BB, and 8 HR. That is 6.85 K/9, 3.74 BB/9, and 1.66 HR/9, with a .352 xwOBA, 89.5 mph average EV, 40.8% hard-hit, and 11.7% barrel rate allowed. His four-seamer sits 93.4 mph with a 57% zone rate, his sinker sits 93.2 mph with a 55% zone rate, and his cutter sits 90.3 mph with a 60% zone rate. The chase pitches create the tension: his curve lands in the zone 32%, his sweeper 29%, and his changeup 34%. San Diego can hurt him if Tatis, Machado, Sheets, France, and Merrill force him back into the strike zone.

Walker Buehler has the better name, but his current batted-ball card keeps Arizona live early. He comes in 5-4 with a 4.61 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 82 IP, 83 H, 76 K, 30 BB, and 9 HR. The contact profile is not clean: 90.5 mph average EV, 41.7% hard-hit, .333 xwOBA, and 7.4% barrel rate allowed. His arsenal starts with a 23.4% cutter, 20.7% four-seamer, and 16.9% sinker, then folds in a curve, slider, changeup, and sweeper. The four-seamer sits 94.0 mph with a 53% zone rate, while the sinker reaches the zone 60%. Arizona’s expected top five of Ketel Marte, Perdomo, Carroll, Gabriel Moreno, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. gets two early turns at a pitcher whose fastball command just collapsed at Wrigley.

The batter layer gives both lineups a credible first-five scoring path. Marte is Arizona’s best engine with a 91.3 mph average EV, 45.4% hard-hit, 11.1% barrel rate, and .375 xwOBA. Carroll adds volatility, but the impact remains obvious: 91.7 mph average EV, 47.5% hard-hit, 12% barrels, 14.4-degree launch angle, and enough speed to turn one gap shot into immediate run pressure. San Diego counters with the best raw-contact bat in the game. Tatis owns a 91.8 mph average EV, 52.9% hard-hit, 11% barrels, and .352 xwOBA. Machado’s surface year is colder, but he still carries 90.0 mph EV, 43.5% hard-hit, and 10.5% barrels, then just supplied the three-run swing that snapped San Diego’s losing streak.

Diamondbacks vs. Padres pick, best bet

The Padres’ counter is legitimate. Buehler owns a 7-0 record and 1.98 ERA in 14 career appearances against Arizona, and Pfaadt’s season line gives San Diego several inning-opening lanes. Pfaadt did stabilize in his last start, throwing 5.1 innings of one-run ball against San Francisco in his first start since April 11. San Diego’s expected order also has clean handedness flow: Tatis, Jake Cronenworth, Machado, Sheets, France, Merrill, Xander Bogaerts, Shay Whitcomb Song, and Luis Campusano. The issue is the bridge after Buehler. Jason Adam, Jeremiah Estrada, and Randy Vásquez are all on the 15-day IL, and that strains the exact part of the roster San Diego needs most in a coin-flip divisional game.

The bullpen and environment push me away from laying the Padres number. Arizona’s bullpen enters with a No. 6 snapshot power rank, 21.2 IP over the previous seven days, and a 2.08 ERA in that window. San Diego’s recent relief usage is much uglier: Wandy Peralta has a 9.84 ERA over 3.2 IP, Kyle Hart has an 11.59 ERA over 4.2 IP, Yuki Matsui has a 10.84 ERA, and Adrian Morejon threw 38 pitches Sunday after also working Friday. Petco is not helping the over much, either. RotoWire lists 72 degrees, 0% precipitation, 10 mph left-to-right wind, and no announced umpire yet. The best bet is Diamondbacks F5 team total over 2.5 (+114), playable to +100. Arizona gets the cleaner early target against Buehler’s fastball risk, while the full-game over needs too much late conversion in a neutral run environment.

Secondary play: Diamondbacks ML +103.

Projected score: Diamondbacks 5, Padres 4.

Best bet: Diamondbacks (+105) at Padres
