Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians prediction, pick for MLB on Thursday 7/02/26

Chicago opens a four-game AL Central series at Progressive Field with the better baseball case and a narrow standings edge. The White Sox enter 45-40, one game ahead of 45-42 Cleveland, after taking last week’s meeting through three one-run games. They also won a road series in Baltimore before Wednesday’s 6-1 loss, while Cleveland arrives off a 9-4 win over Texas that snapped the Rangers’ six-game streak. The series carries more pressure than a normal July opener because Cleveland’s projection profile still grades well, while Chicago owns the actual division lead. The Guardians also remain without José Ramírez, which strips their lineup of its best switch-hitting damage, late-inning leverage, and emotional center. Chicago has its own ceiling issue with Munetaka Murakami still out, yet the active roster has produced more stable depth behind Miguel Vargas, Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, Sam Antonacci, Tristan Peters, and Jacob Gonzalez. This is a divisional knife fight, but the White Sox bring the cleaner starter, deeper active order, and fresher late-game map. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Guardians.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

White Sox vs. Guardians prediction, preview

Davis Martin gives Chicago the sharper rotation foundation. He enters 9-3 with a 3.00 ERA, 93 IP, 90 K, a 23.8 K%, 6.3 BB%, 0.58 HR/9, 43.2% ground-ball rate, 2.92 FIP, 3.49 xFIP, and 2.8 WAR. That profile has real substance under the ERA because he limits walks, suppresses homers, and owns enough secondary stuff to finish at-bats. The contact file keeps Cleveland live: Martin has allowed 89.9 mph EV, a 45.3% hard-hit rate, .306 xwOBA, and 6.3% barrels, with his fastball and cutter carrying more damage risk than his breaking stuff. Cleveland’s expected left-handed stack can pressure him if Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter, Kyle Manzardo, and Brayan Rocchio force early fastball counts. Slade Cecconi deserves similar nuance on the other side. He brings a 4-6 record, 4.18 ERA, 90.1 IP, 70 K, 18.1 K%, 7.5 BB%, 1.20 HR/9, 47.3% ground-ball rate, 4.42 FIP, and 4.35 xFIP. His recent improvement matters because he just worked six-plus scoreless innings against Seattle and has lowered damaging contact through better pitch balance. The White Sox can grind him, but Cecconi’s June keeps this from becoming a cheap starter fade.

Chicago’s active lineup gives Martin enough run support without needing Murakami to save the handicap. RotoWire’s expected order has Antonacci, Vargas, Teel, Benintendi, Colson Montgomery, Meidroth, Braden Montgomery, Peters, and Gonzalez, which gives the White Sox left-handed pressure, switch-hit balance, and bottom-third competence. Vargas is the best complete bat here with 19 HR, 11 SB, a 13.7 BB%, 16.4 K%, .241 ISO, .366 wOBA, 135 wRC+, and 2.9 WAR. Colson Montgomery brings the primary damage pocket with 21 HR, .261 ISO, .482 SLG, and 117 wRC+, though the 32% K rate makes his at-bats more volatile. Antonacci gives the top a strong plate-control shape at .295/.392/.427, 11 SB, a 14.6 K%, and 135 wRC+. Peters lengthens the bottom with .286/.344/.436, 118 wRC+, and 2.2 WAR, while Gonzalez just posted a three-hit, three-RBI game in Baltimore. Benintendi added three hits Tuesday, Teel improves the catching/offense blend, and Braden Montgomery gives the lower half enough athletic pressure to keep Cecconi working from the stretch. That depth makes Chicago’s side stronger than a team-total chase.

Cleveland has a credible counter through left-handed contact, speed, and a few young bats with enough present form. Bazzana owns 7 HR, 12 SB, an 11.5 BB%, .167 ISO, and 111 wRC+, giving the top of the order patience and legs. DeLauter brings the hottest current shape with .275/.344/.422, 7 HR, a 9.7 BB%, 13.2 K%, and 116 wRC+, plus three hits in Wednesday’s win over Texas. Rocchio adds .270/.341/.383, 14 SB, a 13.5 K%, 106 wRC+, and switch-hit contact. Manzardo supplies left-handed thump with 10 HR and a .164 ISO, although his 31.6 K% gives Martin strikeout exits in run-scoring spots. David Fry’s homer against Texas also matters if he lands in the final lineup, because Cleveland needs right-handed impact around the lefty cluster. The limitation remains obvious inside the numbers. Ramírez took 10 HR, 24 SB, a 13.1 BB%, and Cleveland’s cleanest leverage plate appearance to the injured list. Angel Martínez’s absence removes another switch-hitting bat with 11 HR and lineup flexibility. Cleveland can score, especially in this weather, but the lineup asks more young hitters to solve high-leverage innings.

Guardians vs. White Sox pick, best bet

The bullpen and setting push the full-game angle back toward Chicago. Cleveland has the cleaner reputation with Cade Smith, Colin Holderman, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, and Tim Herrin, but Wednesday’s win used several important arms. Holderman threw 18 pitches, Gaddis 15, Sabrowski 16, and Festa 10, leaving the group usable but already touched. Chicago’s Wednesday loss created a better leverage setup. Grant Taylor, Sean Newcomb, and Seranthony Domínguez avoided work, while Bryan Hudson only handled one out. Taylor’s strikeout profile gives Chicago a premium bridge, Newcomb has run prevention and homer suppression, and Hudson gives Will Venable a left-handed lane if Cleveland stacks lefties. The weather adds stress for both pens. Cleveland sits under an Extreme Heat Warning, with game-window temperatures around 89-91 degrees and heat index risk through the evening. That heat can carry mistakes and drain command, but the wind profile is more left-to-right than out. Progressive Field should play warm and dangerous without forcing an automatic over.

The market gives enough room to back the better roster shape at a fair number. White Sox ML −108 is the best bet, playable to −120. I prefer it to White Sox team total over 4.5 +110, because Cecconi’s June form, improved contact profile, and Cleveland’s bullpen quality make five runs a thinner ask. I also prefer the full-game moneyline to White Sox F5 −0.5 +114, because Chicago’s late-game availability check came back stronger than expected. Martin has the best starting-pitcher profile in the game, Chicago has more active lineup depth, and Cleveland’s Ramírez absence lowers the Guardians’ margin in the exact innings that usually decide coin-flip division games. The heat keeps Cleveland dangerous, and Cecconi can keep this close early. Chicago still owns the better blend of starter quality, offensive depth, and bullpen readiness.

Best bet: White Sox ML −108.

Projected score: White Sox 5, Guardians 3.

Best bet: White Sox (-108) at Guardians
