West Coast contenders are set to clash this evening in SoCal. The Mariners (8-10) have their eyes set on a franchise-first American League pennant. Seattle will have a chance to see how it stacks up with one of the sport’s best clubs on Wednesday. The Padres (11-6) have bounced back from a rocky start, winning six straight games. San Diego needs every win it can get going forward to keep pace with the defending champion Dodgers.
The Padres are favorites (-115) over the Mariners, with the over/under set at eight runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Wednesday’s showdown between Seattle and San Diego on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Mariners vs. Padres prediction, preview
It’s a battle between two breakout pitchers this evening. For the visitors, it’ll be Emerson Hancock toeing the slab. It’s been a lackluster four-year career thus far for the former top prospect. However, there’s hope that the right-hander has turned a corner this season. Through three starts, he’s notched a 2.04 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 19 strikeouts. That includes a masterful six-inning, nine-strikeout, zero-hit performance vs. the Guardians. While regression is inevitable, the Mariners are known for developing pitchers. Could Hancock be their latest success story?
The 26-year-old will hope to keep rolling on Wednesday, but it might not be easy. The Padres are similarly built to Seattle, relying heavily on pitching and above-average defense. However, they’ve shown improvement on offense this season compared to last. The Friars are scoring baseball’s 12th-most runs per game (4.59) this season; they were 18th in that category back in 2025 (4.28). As always, this lineup revolves around sluggers Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado. However, outfielder Ramon Laureano (156 wRC+) has been the team’s best hitter so far.
For San Diego, it’ll be Randy Vasquez making his fourth start of the season. A throw-in from the Yankees during 2024’s Juan Soto trade, the righty has been a decent innings eater since joining the Padres. However, he appears to have made major changes to his pitching style over the offseason. Once seen as a soft-tosser, Vasquez has brought his fastball velocity up from an average of 90.2 MPH to 94.8 MPH. Unsurprisingly, that added heat has led to stellar numbers. Over 17.2 innings, the Dominican has recorded a 1.02 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 19 strikeouts. Is this level of success sustainable? Much like Hancock, the answer is probably not. Still, the 27-year-old has shown enough for Friars fans to get excited.
Vasquez throws the kitchen sink at opponents, utilizing seven different pitches. Two of his most used, other than a fastball, are the cutter (20.7%) and changeup (12.0%). Since 2025, the Mariners own a combined .233 expected batting average against those offerings. To make matters worse, several Seattle hitters are in a funk. All-Stars Julio Rodriguez (79 wRC+), Cal Raleigh (49 wRC+) and Josh Naylor (31 wRC+) look lost at the plate. As a unit, the M’s are averaging an MLB-worst 2.0 runs per game on the road this season.
Mariners vs. Padres pick, best bet
Small sample sizes are dangerous, but it’s safe to say that Hancock and Vasquez are improved this season. A date at pitcher-friendly Petco Park certainly bodes well for both of their chances tonight. San Diego, despite some decent numbers, has been a bit top heavy on offense so far. In comparison, Seattle’s biggest bats have yet to get going at the dish. Keeping that in mind, expect these two arms to prevent things from getting out of hand tonight.
