With a handful of moves at the running back position already in the books, the latest domino has now fallen as Travis Etienne Jr. has agreed to terms on a multiyear deal with the New Orleans Saints.
With the former Jacksonville Jaguars standout headed closer to home, how does this signing impact Etienne’s fantasy football outlook in 2026 and beyond?

A former first-round pick out of Clemson in the 2021 NFL Draft, Etienne spent the first five seasons of his career in Jacksonville. While he missed his entire rookie campaign due to a lisfranc injury, the young halfback was quite productive once he hit the field for the Jaguars. He tallied three seasons of 1,000+ rushing yards with a penchant for breakaway runs, but his impact wasn’t limited to only the ground game. Etienne recorded at least 35 receptions in all four seasons and eclipsed 1,400 scrimmage yards twice thanks to his pass-catching ability, coming up just shy with 1,399 total yards last season. With his time in Florida now at a close, he finishes his tenure as a Jag with 32 total touchdowns for the team over those four years.
The talent is obvious on the NFL gridiron, but it also translates to production on the virtual field as well. Etienne averaged at least 12.1 PPR points in three of his four seasons, with a 16.6-PPG campaign in 2023 as his career-best mark and a resurgent 14.9-PPG average last year. His per-game finishes at the halfback position in PPR formats over that span? RB24, RB7, RB41, and RB14 in order from least to most recent.
With the Jaguars drafting Bhayshul Tuten and utilizing the younger back down the stretch last season, the writing was on the wall for a potential move for Etienne. The 27-year-old is a starting-caliber talent and has certainly earned the new contract that the Saints have handed him. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, it’s a four-year, $52 million deal for the running back.
So, what does this move mean for Etienne and his value in fantasy football entering 2026 and beyond?
While it won’t score him fantasy points, it’s worth noting that this pairing is a homecoming of sorts for Etienne. A native of Jennings, Louisiana, he’ll now be much closer to home with a roughly three-hour trip from his hometown to New Orleans. That proximity likely played a factor in his decision to sign there, but the projected workload is even more enticing.
Most halfbacks split reps these days as the NFL moves to a committee approach in the backfield, and the Jaguars were no exception. However, it was clear that the coaching staff had big plans for Tuten, who particularly flashes in the team’s lone playoff game. Now, Etienne has a much more secure pathway to a starting role with the Saints and will likely operate as the clear lead option ahead of an aging Alvin Kamara, who will turn 31 this offseason and showed significant signs of regression in an injury-riddled campaign last season.
Etienne should see the lion’s share of carries in the New Orleans backfield next season, though a standout receiver like Kamara is likely to eat into his workload some in the passing game. Still, the volume that comes with this move likely comes with a slight boost to Etienne’s fantasy football outlook in 2026. While he will leave Liam Coen’s system in Jacksonville, the Saints’ offense is on the come-up with second-year head coach Kellen Moore and a fellow sophomore in quarterback Tyler Shough, who showed flashes of a potential franchise talent during his run as the starter in the second half of 2025. Further improvement should be on the horizon for the unit, and Etienne’s arrival brings a game-changing talent to the running back room that the team sorely lacked last season.
With that in mind, there should be a slight upward arrow next to Etienne’s name in way-too-early fantasy football rankings, as well as in team futures for the Saints’ win total next season. While roughly $13 million a year is a chunk of change for a team that was already in a precarious salary cap situation, this move appears beneficial for both sides. Pencil in Etienne as a very safe mid-to-high RB2 in 2026 with room for more during his spike weeks.
