UNC Wilmington Seahawks vs. Charleston Cougars prediction, pick for NCAAM on Sunday 3/01/26

UNC Wilmington gets this at exactly the right time. The Seahawks are 25-4 and 14-2 in the CAA, they are 15-2 at home, and they bring a six-game win streak into a regular-season finale that can lock down the league title on their floor. Charleston is not walking in soft at 20-10 and 13-4, and the Cougars have won four straight, but the spot still tilts home because UNCW already took the first meeting 76-64 and now gets the rematch in Trask with the standings edge and the cleaner season-long profile. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the UNC Wilmington Seahawks and the Charleston Cougars.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

UNCW vs. Charleston prediction, preview

Since the first meeting, Charleston has responded with four straight wins, but look at the shape: 62-57 at Campbell, 74-61 at N.C. A&T, 74-63 against Monmouth, and 85-71 at Hampton. That is a good run, but it is also a run built against the softer half of the league. UNCW answered that same stretch by ripping off five straight after the Charleston win—65-54 over Elon, 70-66 over Hofstra, 79-69 over Monmouth, 73-68 at Campbell, and 88-65 over N.C. A&T. The recent offense is simply steadier on the home side. Zoom back out and the stable edges still belong to UNCW: 77.3 points per game to Charleston’s 75.9, 67.1 allowed to 73.0, 36.0% from three to 29.9%, 39.8 rebounds to 37.9, and only 9.6 turnovers per game to Charleston’s 10.9. That is a better shooting team, a better possession team, and a better margin team at the exact time of year when empty trips start deciding everything.

Jlynn Counter is still Charleston’s organizer at 15.7 points and 5.6 assists on the season, but the recent team sheet says the Cougars have been living more through Christian Reeves and spot scoring around him. Reeves has been the rebound leader in four of the last five, with 11 boards against UNCW, 15 at Campbell, 10 against Monmouth, and 12 at Hampton, while also posting 18 against Campbell and 19 against Monmouth. Chris Davis Jr. has added current-version lift too, leading Charleston with 14 in the Hofstra loss and then helping space the floor during the bounce-back run.

UNCW’s frontcourt form is even cleaner. Patrick Wessler is at 13.6 points and 9.3 rebounds for the year, and in the recent run he has gone for 18 against Hofstra, 12 boards against Monmouth, 14 boards at Campbell, and 19 against N.C. A&T after already putting 15 and 10 on Charleston in the first meeting. Nolan Hodge still gives UNCW the best perimeter scorer in the game at 14.9 points with 80 made threes at 39.6%, but the biggest recent signal is that the Seahawks are no longer depending on one hot hand—Greedy Williams has six assists in two of the last three, and the ball has stayed organized even when Hodge is not carrying the whole scoring load.

Charleston vs. UNCW pick, best bet

The Cougars are bigger than most CAA teams, Reeves is finishing at 65.8% from the floor, they shoot 80.0% from the line through Counter’s lead guard slot, and their recent defensive form is strong enough to make this ugly. The problem is that UNCW already showed exactly how to attack that path. In the 76-64 win, the Seahawks took the lead with 18:19 left in the first half and never trailed again. They turned Charleston over 13 times while committing only five themselves, pushed the paint edge, and built the game around control rather than shot variance. That matters because the core pressure point has not changed: Charleston still does not stretch the floor reliably enough to erase mistakes fast, while UNCW still rebounds and values the ball better. In a short spread, that is the kind of edge that ages well.

The coaching and venue context sharpen the same read. Chris Mack has done strong work getting Charleston to 20 wins in Year 2, but this group still looks more matchup-sensitive than its record suggests because the outside shooting comes and goes. Takayo Siddle’s team looks older in its habits. The Seahawks have hit the moneyline in 14 of their last 16 and covered in eight of their last nine, which tracks with what the box tells us: they rebound, they keep the turnover count low, and they do not need a weird script to win. At home, with a 15-2 record in the building and the league title sitting there, that profile is the one to trust.

Best bet is UNC Wilmington -4.5, playable to -5. Charleston is hot enough to make this feel like work, and Reeves gives the Cougars a real interior answer, so this is not a blind lay. But the recent-picture shape is still better for UNCW: longer win streak, stronger recent scoring, cleaner recent ball control, better three-point offense, and the same frontcourt anchor who already hurt Charleston in the first meeting. The way it dies is Charleston flattening the game with free throws and half-court size—but the stronger probability is still UNCW winning the rebound-and-turnover battle again and landing in the 74-67 range.

Best bet: UNCW -4.5 (-110) vs. Charleston
