Kent State Golden Flashes vs. Akron Zips prediction, pick for NCAAM on Friday 2/27/26

The Zips walk into Kent at 23-5 overall and 14-1 in MAC play, they have won four straight, and they have won six straight in this rivalry. Kent State is no pushover at 21-7 and 12-3 with its own four-game streak, and the M.A.C. Center has been a real edge, but this spot still bends toward the team with the cleaner offensive identity and the more trustworthy decision-making under pressure. In a rivalry game that can get emotional fast, the side I want is the one that can still manufacture good shots when the first wave of adrenaline burns off. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Kent State Golden Flashes and the Akron Zips.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Kent State vs. Akron prediction, preview

Akron is scoring 89.8 points per game against 74.9 allowed, shooting 50.4% from the floor and 37.3% from three, while piling up 19.0 assists against only 10.9 turnovers. Kent State scores 85.6 a night, but it is doing it with a looser profile at 45.6% from the floor, 35.3% from three, 16.3 assists, and 13.8 turnovers, while also allowing 79.7. The league-only split sharpens that gap instead of shrinking it. Akron’s MAC line sits at 85.1 scored and 72.7 allowed, with 48.4% shooting, 36.2% from deep, 81.0% at the line, 17.5 assists, and 12.0 turnovers. Kent’s MAC line is 80.5 scored and 77.9 allowed, with 42.9% shooting, 33.2% from three, 75.9% at the line, 14.5 assists, and 13.4 turnovers. The Akron edge is clean-possession basketball. The Kent edge is messier and still dangerous—40.2 rebounds per game for the season, 13.1 offensive boards, and in league play 40.9 rebounds, 20.6 made free throws, and a +6.9 rebounding margin. That is the whole handicap: Akron wins the quality of possessions, Kent tries to win the volume of ugly ones.

The recent form says that baseline is still alive right now. Akron is 9-1 in its last 10, Kent State is 7-3, and both are on W4 runs, but Akron’s last few weeks have had more separation and more offensive authority. The Zips’ last five scores are 69, 99, 90, 78, and 99, which is 87.0 points per game, and their last three league wins have all come by double digits. Kent’s last five are 83, 78, 75, 95, and 65, which is 79.2 per game, and the recent wins have been a little shakier. The Flashes needed a 51-point second half and a buzzer-beater just to escape Central Michigan 83-81 after trailing by 10 at the break. Akron, meanwhile, has looked more like a team leaning into March with intent. This is not just a good offense on paper anymore. It is a good offense still producing at a higher recent clip than the team across from it.

Akron vs. Kent State pick, best bet

Tavari Johnson is still the clearest guard on the floor, and he is arriving hot. He leads Akron at 20.6 points and 5.2 assists for the season, he was named league player of the week after averaging 21 points and six assists across the Western Michigan and Ball State wins, then he followed that by dropping 23 points and five assists against Buffalo. Amani Lyles has become the second blade that makes this offense hard to flatten. He just went for a career-high 26 points and eight rebounds at Ball State, then followed with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Buffalo. Evan Mahaffey gave Akron another jolt with 20 points, nine rebounds, and three steals in that Buffalo game. Kent State has real answers, starting with Delrecco Gillespie, who is a monster inside at 18.7 points and 11.6 rebounds for the season and 19.1 and 12.1 in league play. He just posted 22 and 14 at Ball State and 17 and 11 against Central Michigan. Morgan Safford hung 27 on Bowling Green. Cian Medley still runs the offense with 106 assists in 15 MAC games. But the Kent backcourt profile is still shakier than Akron’s, because those playmaking numbers come with 48 turnovers in league play, and that is exactly where Akron can squeeze this game.

The first meeting matters, but not pound-for-pound. Kent State’s 1-for-23 night from three is the obvious headline, and that kind of brick storm should not be projected forward. The better lesson is deeper than that. Kent still got to some of its favorite math in that game. The Flashes grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, won the glass 52-39, and took 21 free throws. They still lost 69-52 because Akron made 11 threes, finished with 17 assists to Kent’s six, and kept the game living in its own cleaner rhythm. That is the repeatable blueprint. Kent does not need another total perimeter collapse to lose this matchup. If Akron keeps the ball, keeps the floor spaced, and forces Kent to score through half-court strain instead of pure second-chance chaos, the Zips can survive a rebounding deficit and still cover a short number.

So the bet is Akron -3.5. Kent State’s home floor is real at 13-2, and the Flashes have enough rebounding and foul pressure to keep this sweaty deep into the second half. That is why this number stays short. But Akron is still 6-1 on the road in MAC play, its league profile is far cleaner on both ends, and its current offensive form is stronger than Kent’s. This feels closer to Akron -4.5 than -3.5, which is enough for me to lay it at the current number. The way it dies is Kent turning this into a whistle-and-rebounds grinder with Gillespie owning the interior and the crowd carrying a one-possession game into the final minute—but all signs point to Akron still creating the better shots, winning the guard play, and making the steadier late-game plays.

Akron 86, Kent State 81.

Best bet: Akron -3.5 (-110) at Kent State
