Louisville Cardinals vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 2/04/26

Updated:

Louisville is 15–6, 5–4 in league play, ranked No. 24, and the home crowd expects a clean win. Notre Dame is 11–11 and 2–7 in conference, and every road night has been a resilience exam. The story of their season still pivots on the absence of Markus Burton, because the offense has to invent itself without a late-clock bail-out. This is the kind of spot where a ranked favorite wants to turn the arena into a vise by the first media timeout. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Louisville Cardinals and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Louisville vs. Notre Dame prediction, preview

Louisville plays at 73.1 possessions per game to Notre Dame’s 69.0, and it pairs that speed with a 1.177 offensive efficiency and a 0.964 defensive efficiency. Notre Dame sits at 1.071 on offense and 1.046 on defense, which is basically the gap between functional and controlling. The shot profile also tilts hard: Louisville takes 54.4% of its shots from three, while Notre Dame sits at 41.5%, so the Cardinals can win possessions without needing paint dominance. Louisville’s 55.8% effective field goal rate is paired with a 13.7% turnover rate, which is how a big favorite avoids the empty-trip giveaways that keep an underdog breathing. The recent signal matches the profile, too, with Mikel Brown Jr. coming off a 20-point night in an 88–74 win over SMU, even after Louisville wore a 31-point loss at Duke.

Louisville has actual March names, and the headliner is Ryan Conwell (G) because the volume is national-grade. He’s at 19.1 points per game, tied for 54th nationally, and he already has 73 made threes on 204 attempts. Mikel Brown Jr. (G) was also Preseason All-ACC First Team, and he’s giving them a second downhill scorer at 16.4 per game. Isaac McKneely (W) is the spacing threat that punishes late help, sitting on 60 made threes while clearing 38% from deep. Sananda Fru (F) is the rim-finisher and eraser, leading the team at 6.7 boards and 1.3 blocks per game.

Notre Dame’s season still revolves around what it lost, because Markus Burton (G) was the ACC’s leading scorer last year at 21.3, and he was posting 18.5 per game before the broken ankle. In his absence, Jalen Haralson (W) has become the creator by necessity, and the career-high 26 at Syracuse is the clearest proof of that burden. Cole Certa (W) can also detonate late-clock offense, coming off a 34-point night in the 100–97 double-overtime loss to Virginia. The possession-swinger is Carson Towt (C), whose offensive rebounding rate is literally leaderboard material: first in the ACC and 14th nationally in offensive rebounds per game.

Notre Dame vs. Louisville pick, best bet

The Irish need the three-point math to land, because Louisville allows opponents just a 47.2% effective field goal rate and a 45.1% two-point clip. That’s a rim profile that quietly strangles easy offense, then forces the underdog into jump-shot living. Notre Dame can shoot well enough to make this uncomfortable, but it also shoots 69.9% at the stripe as a team, and that’s the exact place big dogs lose covers. The other problem is possession leakage: Louisville forces turnovers on 15.6% of opponent plays and generates steals on 8.9% of plays, so one sloppy stretch becomes a transition burst. Without Burton’s creation, those bursts are harder to answer in kind, because the Irish don’t have the same late-clock organizer.

So I’m taking Notre Dame +17.5, because this number asks Louisville to win cleanly and keep pressing for forty minutes. Louisville should dictate the game, but the spread is pricing a near-perfect night against a team whose most credible weapon is the one thing that can swing variance fast. If the Irish hit enough threes to stay attached, Louisville’s advantage still looks like a win, not necessarily a cover. Louisville also doesn’t tend to cough up leads once it gets in front, which matters when the endgame turns into clock management instead of margin hunting.

Louisville 83, Notre Dame 68.

Best bet: Notre Dame +17.5 (-105) at Louisville
