Opening Odds for the 2026 Winter Olympics: Gold Medal Count

Opening Odds for the 2026 Winter Olympics: Gold Medal Count

Updated:

Nearly four years after the flame was extinguished over the Beijing National Stadium in China, the Winter Olympics are back. Thousands of the world’s best winter sports athletes have descended upon Milan and the Italian Alps town of Cortina d’Ampezzo to compete across 116 events between February 6 and February 22.

93 different nations will be represented at the Olympics, with Benin, Guinea-Bissau, and the United Arab Emirates making their debuts. 16 nations will have only one athlete, while the United States (235), Canada (210), and hosts Italy (196) will be represented by the most participants.

That also means that the United States, Canada, and Italy will have the most chances to rack up gold medals, so it’s not a surprise that all three have among the shortest odds to win the most golds across the next few weeks. That honor belongs to Norway (-160), which — despite having a population of just 5.6 million people and sending only 80 athletes to these Games — has topped the gold medal table in each of the last three Winter Olympics. The Scandinavian nation also has the most total golds (148) and total medals (406) between all of the Winter Games. The United States (+450) ranks second (114), and Germany (+400) ranks third (105).
