Portland State Vikings vs. Montana Grizzlies prediction, pick for NCAAM on Thursday 1/29/26

Portland is loud right now, and the standings make it louder. Portland State is 13–5 overall and 7–0 in Big Sky play, sitting alone at the top. Montana walks in with real urgency, because it’s 6–2 in league and needs a road punch to stay in the title chase. This is also a legit home-floor spot for the Vikings, who are 7–1 at home and riding a long conference home streak. The game feels like a referendum on identity: Portland State’s defense-and-glass grind versus Montana’s shot-making and late-game poise. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Portland State Vikings and the Montana Grizzlies.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Portland State vs. Montana prediction, preview

The numbers say this won’t be a slow dance, even if the possessions get heavy. Portland State plays at 72.8 possessions per game, and Montana lives in the same neighborhood on tempo. Both teams average 79.9 points, so the separator is how those points are manufactured. Portland State’s profile is built on travelable defense and second chances, giving up 70.7 per game while pulling in 38.6 rebounds with 16.7 assists. Montana’s scoring margin in league play is sturdier than people assume, and the recent form is real, with three straight wins capped by a 69–60 win over Idaho State. Portland State’s momentum is even louder, coming off a road sweep at Eastern Washington (65–61) and Idaho (69–66) to extend a seven-game win streak.

The dudes explain why the spread is priced tight. Terri Miller Jr. (F) is the engine that makes Portland State feel inevitable, at 19.6 points per game with the kind of efficiency that kills help defense. Jaylin Henderson (G) brings the pressure valve, averaging 17.6 points with 6.3 assists and 1.7 steals, and he’s the one who turns one loose handle into a four-point swing. Tre-Vaughn Minott (C) is the possession bully, sitting at 8.8 rebounds per game, and the Sacramento State game showed the ceiling when he went for 23 points and 20 boards. That same night mattered because it wasn’t a one-man thing, with Miller stuffing the box score while the offense kept creating clean follow-ups.

For Montana, Money Williams (G) is the stabilizer who travels, at 19.0 points per game on 49.4% shooting with 84.7% at the line. Tyler Thompson (G) is the variance switch, and the Weber State win was the reminder when he scored 21 in an 81–65 result. Te’Jon Sawyer (F) is the interior finisher Montana needs in road games, shooting 63.4% from the field with a steady scoring load.

Montana vs. Portland State pick, best bet

Montana can keep +4.5 alive if Thompson’s shot-making shows up early and Williams gets to his late-game spots, because that’s how a road dog survives empty stretches. Montana’s cleanest closing equity is the stripe, with Williams at 84.7% and multiple rotation pieces north of that mark. The fragility is obvious, though, because Portland State’s entire personality is extra possessions and deflating defense, and Minott is built to win the rebounding minutes that steal covers. If Henderson is turning the game into live-ball chaos, Montana’s offense starts taking harder shots late in the clock, and that’s where margins get slippery. And the home-court signal matters here, because Portland State has stacked this run into a real conference crown push, not a cute January blip.

So here’s where I land with the whole board in mind. The market has Portland State -4.5 with a 143.5 total, and I respect why the Vikings are favored at home. Portland State has also been an ATS machine this season, which tells me the market has chased them and they’ve still covered. But -4.5 is a hook number in a game that projects like a two-possession fight, and Montana’s best traits are exactly the ones that cash dog tickets late. I’m not trying to outsmart Portland State’s win equity, and I’m not pretending Montana is the better team. I’m buying points in a matchup where shot-making and free throws can steal a cover even when the defense loses the night.

My best bet is Montana +4.5. Portland State 73, Montana 71.

Best bet: Montana +4.5 (-105) at Portland State
