South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Florida Gators prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 1/28/26

Houston walks into Fort Worth as the Big 12’s measuring stick, sitting 17–2 overall and 5–1 in league play, with the kind of defense that makes games feel shorter. TCU is 13–7 and 3–4, and this is the exact profile spot where the building matters. The Frogs have already proven they can punch up, and they’re coming off a loud road win at Baylor. The stakes are simple: Houston can keep pace at the top, while TCU needs pedigree wins to climb back toward the bracket’s clean air. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Florida Gators.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

South Carolina vs. Florida prediction, preview

Florida is generating 64.5 field-goal attempts per game, and it’s creating extra tries like a machine with 15.3 offensive rebounds per game and a 43.9% offensive-rebound rate. That’s not a stylistic quirk. That’s an identity that travels. Florida also lives in the free-points lane with 26.4 free-throw attempts per game and a 0.410 FTA/FGA rate, which is why it can score even when the jumper looks stiff. The catch is how Florida scores outside. It’s 57.8% on twos, but only 28.5% from three, and that matters when the spread is this thick. South Carolina’s defense is built to take away the easiest version of margin, holding opponents to 29.8% from three and only 6.2 made threes allowed per game. So Florida’s clean cover path runs through paint efficiency, putbacks, and free throws, not a shooting bonfire.

The personnel fits the geometry on both sides. Thomas Haugh (F) is Florida’s steady heartbeat at 17.4 points and 6.7 rebounds, the guy who can score without a perfect possession. Alex Condon (F) sits at 13.4 points and 8.1 rebounds, and the bounce-back angle is real after the Auburn loss, where he posted one point with four turnovers. Rueben Chinyelu (C) is a margin piece in human form with 11.9 points and 11.0 rebounds, because he turns misses into points without requiring play design. Xaivian Lee (G) at 11.2 points and Boogie Fland (G) at 11.2 points with 3.6 assists give Florida enough initiation to keep the game from getting sticky.

For South Carolina, Myles Stute (F) is the obvious variance lever, scoring 12.3 points while shooting 41.7% from three. Kobe Knox (F) adds 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds as a secondary finisher. Mike Sharavjamts (G) is the connector at 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists, the type who keeps a dog’s offense from dying in late clock. Meechie Johnson (G) is at 7.8 points, and South Carolina needs his creation to show up if the first action gets cut off. Eli Ellis (G) being out matters too, because it tightens guard minutes and narrows the late-game shot menu.

Florida vs. South Carolina pick, best bet

South Carolina’s cover tree is credible, and it’s built on two variance doors that don’t require a miracle. First, threes with volume. The Gamecocks take 26.9 threes per game and make 8.7, and even at 32.2%, that’s enough to generate a couple quick swings in a loud building. Second, free throws that actually cash. South Carolina shoots 78.7% at the line, which is how underdogs keep scoring when the halfcourt gets ugly. Now layer in Florida’s margin brittleness. Florida shoots only 70.1% at the line and doesn’t punish you from deep, so it’s harder for the favorite to create that “blink and it’s sixteen” separation. The refutation is obvious, and it’s why this is still dangerous. Florida’s offensive glass can bury a team without any shooting, and the Gators can keep South Carolina from running its own second-chance game by holding opponents to 7.3 offensive boards per night and a 20.9% offensive-rebound rate.

With the board in mind, I’m not paying a premium for a road favorite that doesn’t reliably stretch the floor. -13.5 asks Florida to win the possession battle and also win the conversion battle, and that’s a lot to demand in this gym. This feels closer to -10 than -13.5 once the late-game free-throw profiles enter the chat.

I expect Florida to lean into two-big lineups and treat every miss like an invitation, because the rebounding edge is its cleanest separator. Florida should keep hunting paint touches and rim runs, because 57.8% on twos is the most stable scoring lane on the floor. South Carolina should play wide and fast with early threes and hard drives, because the three-point volume and 78.7% free-throw shooting give it a real scoring floor. If South Carolina strings together makes at the line and just one hot perimeter stretch, the points stay valuable all night. If Florida wins the glass the way it usually does, it still wins the game, but the cover stays annoyingly out of reach.

I’m taking South Carolina +13.5 as the best bet, because the dog has threes, it has elite free-throw shooting, and Florida’s cover is more workmanlike than explosive. I’ve got Florida winning, but not running away: Florida 79, South Carolina 68.

Best bet: South Carolina +13.5 (-110) vs. Florida
