Women’s hoops fans and sneakerheads alike have been calling for the Aces star to get her own sneaker for literal years and now that moment is upon us. Dropping on May 6 for $110, Nike says the A’One “Pink A’ura” proves that Wilson was right when she tweeted what is delayed is not denied.
Wilson has long been one of the faces of the WNBA — a three-time MVP, two-time WNBA champion, six-time All-Star, two-time defensive player of the year and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist — and on the shortlist for best player in the world. However, that hasn’t translated into her own signature sneaker, a perceived snub not overlooked by fans of Wilson and the burgeoning women’s basketball space. After years of teases — and the release of signature sneakers for other stars in the W like Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart — Nike is finally ready to give the people what they want. And they’re not just stopping with the “Pink A’ura” colorway, as two other colorways are on deck which look to keep the momentum rolling for A’ja’s debut sneaker as the WNBA season gets underway.

Nike says the brings “Pink A’ura” colorway of the A’One brings A’ja’s “passion for pink to the court with a gradual ambience that speaks to A’ja’s rare aura.” Nike notes on SNKRS that “a plush foam midsole underfoot provides unapologetic comfort, helping to keep her fresh for putting the team on her back.”
There has arguably never been a better time to launch a signature sneaker for a women’s basketball star. Ratings and interest are on the rise, from the Women’s NCAA tournament to the WNBA playoffs and interest in the players’ sneakers have kept pace. UConn star and No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers had a PE of the GT Hustle 3 drop earlier this year and Ionescu’s Sabrina 1 and Sabrina 2 models have been among the most-worn sneakers on court for both the WNBA and the NBA on minutes-played basis. Will the A’One give Ionescu a run for her money when it comes to signature hoops shoes? Only time will tell, but the hype is real.
Nike is doing everything it can to build on that hype and make the debut of the A’One feel like a MOMENT. The Aces star gifted pairs of the A’One to all her Las Vegas teammates and her (reported) partner, Heat star Bam Adebayo. The Swoosh even turned to former First Daughter Malia Obama to direct a promo for the A’One.

The A’One currently has an average price of $239 on StockX on 23 sales over the last three months, which is a strong performance for a modern basketball sneaker. I noted recently that Nike needs to develop new hits with new stars to add to its stable of classic retro models from legendary stars. I imagine that the A’One will have the entire marketing might of Nike behind it, with special colorways for marquee events like the WNBA All-Star Game and Finals (assuming the Aces make it there) and even some NBA players still in the postseason lacing the shoe up. With Wilson, Ionescu, Bueckers and Caitlin Clark all repping the Swoosh, women’s basketball will be at the forefront for the brand going forward. Nike needs to give the people what they want and take advantage of this moment and really get behind Wilson and the A’One. This should be a slam dunk hit and the start of line that will be a pillar of Nike basketball as the stars of the post-MJ era like LeBron James and Kevin Durant begin to wind down their legendary careers.
