The NFL Color Rush saga was a sight to behold, and it appears we missed out on some crazy designs from the era. Last night, two prototypes from the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers leaked online. Take a look:

I have no words. It’s hard to criticize these since they never touched the field, and there’s a long line of ugly production prototypes. In place of these, the 49ers went with an all black look, and the Bucs went with a vibrant red with pewter numbers.
This would have been the first time the Bucs adopted the creamsicle orange outside of their 1980s uniforms as a primary color, and it was a massive flop. The best comparison is the Dolphins’ color rush, which proved you can use too much orange.
San Francisco would have been clunky with gold helmets, jerseys, and pants. Granted, the league wanted to try something new, while also dealing with only having one helmet they could wear all season. Besides an all-red look, the black on black the 49ers went with was their best option.
None of these looked good, and the color rush era as a whole had very few appealing uniforms. The most fascinating color rush tale is the saga of the Washington franchise. Nike created all of the league’s designs, and spun up an all-yellow alternate for Washington. There were promotional photoshoots and they even hit the store shelves. But, when it came time for Washington to wear these against the Dallas Cowboys, the team outright refused because of how much they hated the look, wearing all burgundy instead.
Even for the 49ers, this happened to them 33 years ago. Back in 1991, San Francisco unveiled a radical new helmet design showcasing a flashy new 49ers logo. Fans were so upset, they inundated the team’s offices with so many complaints that the team reversed its decision and stuck with the iconic design.
