The Tennessee Titans are ditching an iconic throwback this upcoming season. Yesterday, the Titans announced a uniform shift, making their “Titans Blue” alternate uniforms their new primary home jerseys starting in 2025.

Because of this shift, Tennessee is no longer wearing their Houston Oilers throwback uniforms, a move that honestly is confusing to me.
Titans President & Ceo Burke Nihill said the team will continue to pay tribute to players past and present with the light blue uniforms and highlight a color that has been a part of every uniform since 1960.
The Oilers throwback is certainly one of, if not the best, uniforms in NFL history, but it is absolutely surrounded by controversy.
Although the Titans are the team that was at one point the Houston (and Tennessee) Oilers, the Houston Texans feel they should be the ones who have claim to the old Oilers color. Houston introduced an “H-Town Blue” color this past season that looks identical to the Oilers blue. Tennessee has even worn the Oilers throwback against the Texans twice, which some felt was purposeful.
This uniform is way too good to be shelved, and I personally feel that even with all of this bad blood, it is a branding decision. The Titans want to make their own history in baby blue uniforms, and want that success to be associated with their home jerseys, not one that everyone associates with a city that hosts their divisional rival.
The other side is that the Titans likely want to have more variety in their uniform set. It’s not good for business to be selling an alternate uniform that features a very similar primary color to your home uniform. Almost nobody in the NFL does that.
My guess is you will see the Titans introduce a second alternate uniform in 2026, similar to the Texans. This change would open the way to a red alternate, which would be their best choice, in my opinion, if Tennesee were to develop a new uniform.
