The drama never ends in New York, as the Aaron Rodgers era with the Jets continues to produce more tabloid headlines than wins on the field.
There have been rumors swirling that Rodgers has been playing with an injury for a while and refuses to get checked out or to get an MRI. Which Mike Golic Jr. says feels like a callback to Mike Golic Sr.’s era. Senior confirms that there were times that he would refuse all treatment in a bid to stay on the field, avoiding the training room at all costs. He says “back in the day” coaches would notice who was in the training room and getting treatment, so guys would ice themselves on their own.
When it comes to Rodgers, Senior says it’s. not a matter of the Jets going in a different direction at quarterback next year. It’s now that the drama has gotten to the point of will the change happen before the end of this season. Will Aaron go to the IR? Will Aaron get benched? Will Aaron get released? No matter how this season ends, Senior says Rodgers DEFINITELY isn’t going to be back with the Jets in 2025.
And GoJo thinks that’s probably why Aaron is trying to hold on right now. Amid rumors from friend of the program Dianna Russini that Rodgers’ relationship with owner Woody Johnson has been strained and Johnson has lost faith in the future Hall of Famer to bring the Jets back to the promised land, GoJo says we can all see that Rodgers is not the quarterback he used to be. And to him it all seems like it’s going to come to an end, likely before the end of the season.
GoJo says the sands of time finally caught up to Rodgers. The Achilles injury last season was the straw that broke the camel’s back for one of the greatest players ever to play the position, but who like the rest of us couldn’t beat father time and was not capable of shouldering the load like he had in the past and as he was asked to do this season.
Senior thinks even beyond Rodgers there will be a purging of players on the Jets who were brought in specifically to work with Rodgers. They tried the Aaron Rodgers experiment for a couple of years, it failed miserably and now Senior says the Jets will rid themselves of the aging vets and look to rebuild anew again. And GoJo agrees that there will be a lot of wholesale changes after the Jets pushed all their chips into the middle of the table after they acquired Rodgers. He says they knew when they began the Rodgers era that the timeline was going to be shrunk to almost nothing. They did everything they could to make him comfortable and it just didn’t work out. The Jets are going to have a chance to wipe the slate almost completely clean next year, but the problem (much to Stugotz’s chagrin) is that the same family that has made all of these mistakes in the past will still be making decisions into the future.
