The NFC West is shaping up to be a dogfight. The top three teams in the division — the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks — currently sit at 4-4. To discuss the current state of the Seahawks and their outlook on the remainder of the season, Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. were joined by Seahawks veteran receiver Tyler Lockett on Thursday’s edition of GoJo and Golic.
Lockett is now the second-leading receiver in the history of the Seahawks, and GoJo wondered if it was still weird for Lockett to hear the levels he has risen to. Lockett shared that it isn’t strange and that his primary focus has always been on playing at a high level each year. Lockett adds that being in his 10th season, it is enjoyable to hear others list off his accolades, but he still feels that he has not done much yet. Although he does acknowledge that this may come from not doing as much reflecting on his journey.
As one of the Seahawks’ veterans, Senior asked Lockett how it has been dealing with young players coming into the NFL. Lockett acknowledges how the game of football is evolving, specifically as it pertains to players coming into the league having already secured NIL deals prior to being drafted. By contrast, when Lockett entered the league, getting drafted was their first time a player was seeing a substantial amount of money. Lockett also mentions how rookie head coaches have a unique approach to practice compared to the old days of training camp, where players would experience intense two-a-days.
Staying on the topic of change, GoJo points out how Lockett has had coaching stability for many years with the Seahawks in the person of Pete Carroll. After so many years with Carroll, Lockett and the Seahawks are now transitioning into the Mike Macdonald regime. GoJo asked Lockett what it has been like for him playing under Macdonald and how he runs the team. Lockett expressed that adjusting to change requires a lot of buy-in and adaptability. He shared that it can feel uncomfortable when you are used to doing things a certain way but suggested you need to learn to be uncomfortable before you can become comfortable again. He gave Macdonald a ton of credit for the job he is doing in his first head coaching opportunity, especially when it comes to getting everyone on board regarding his vision and the system he wants to establish.
Senior praised Lockett for having six seasons with over 100 receptions, especially given the league’s changing offensive structure, which heavily involves running backs and tight ends in the passing game. Despite those changes, Senior points out that the Seahawks’ offense has been wide receiver-driven, with Lockett, DK, and Jackson leading the way. Lockett, in true veteran fashion, refrains from joining in on the praise and instead critiques where the offense can improve. He points out Seattle is currently last in play-action plays and while the Seahawks excel at drop-backs, the running game hasn’t reached the desired level. Lockett says establishing the run and improving play-action would open up the entire offense instead of relying solely on drop-backs.
With Seattle’s next three games coming against divisional opponents, Senior asked Lockett if it adds extra focus He shares that the mindset is as if they are back to a 0-0 record. He admits that some games have gotten away from the Seahawks and adds Seattles doesn’t have room to let any more go, especially with everyone in the division so close in standings. The Seahawks must do whatever it takes to come out on top in these games.
