Pat Freiermuth ($6,200)
Can National Tight Ends Day be observed on a Monday? From fan favorites like Travis Kelce and Sam LaPorta to fresh names like Nate Adkins, America’s favorite position found the endzone in droves during the Sunday slate. Pat Freiermuth is the likely suspect to keep the party going one extra night.
In his fourth year in Pittsburgh, the Penn State product is second on the squad’s pass-catching totem pole. If anyone needed a change at the signal caller, it was Freiermuth, who had resorted to being the dump-off option near the scrimmage line. He’s had tremendous receiving prowess since his stint with the Nittany Lions, but he provides little value after the catch. The 25-year-old is a seam threat who can pluck the ball out of the sky or find pockets against zone defenses and gather a bulk of receptions near the first-down marker. Having him as a safety valve was a waste of his skillset but indicative of the lack of trust in Justin Fields under center.
Freiermuth faces a tough matchup against a New York defense that has stifled opposing tight ends. His role in Arthur Smith’s offense is still unclear, but the blend of upside and red zone work is enough to make me optimistic.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. ($4,400)
There’s an NFL epidemic of favoring inefficient, veteran backs over the younger, more explosive options. Similar situations are apparent in Tampa Bay and Denver, with the latest happening in the Big Apple. Devin Singletary is a fine runner, now on his third team in as many years. He lacks a second gear and can never consistently muster chunk gains. He’s also prone to putting the ball on the floor, fumbling twice in just 61 carries this season. The Giants’ ground game would greatly benefit by simply making rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. the primary rusher.
The fifth-round pick burst onto the scene in week five, running for 129 yards in a dominant performance. Tracy Jr. followed that up with over 100 all-purpose yards and punching in his first career touchdown. His workload took a hit thanks to his club getting blown out and Singletary’s return, but it’s still apparent who the better option is. This group has no incentive to tank, and if they want to win football games, giving Tracy Jr. a healthy amount of touches is a great place to start. Expect the fifth-round pick to be a more prominent part of the game plan in this crucial contest.
