On Sunday, the Jets were back to being … well … the Jets.
It was a dreary day for the New York Jets in more ways than one. In addition to the rainy weather, the Jets had 13 penalties during Sunday’s 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos that saw the offense take a step back from a Thursday Night Football thrashing of the New England Patriots. Moreover, dueling post-game press conferences from head coach Robert Salah and QB Aaron Rodgers appeared to put into stark relief that not all is well with Gang Green in New York.
To clarify where things went wrong, Marshall Newhouse joined Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss the state of the Jets and whether Rodgers needs to reconsider his snap cadence.
Before Mike Golic Jr. could kick off the segment, he had to give his Libra brother Marshall a birthday shoutout as he was also celebrating his birthday on Saturday. GoJo asked him how he was feeling, and he responded with balanced, as all Libras are, and that he was feeling his age. Mike Golic Sr. wasn’t having it, however, noting that GoJo and Newhouse are not allowed to call themselves old when, in fact, he is old. Marshall smoothed things over, however, noting that he hopes he will look as good as Senior at his age, continuing the trend of guests complimenting Senior on his looks right in front of GoJo.
Getting back to football, one of the biggest stories of the Jets-Broncos matchup was the Jets’ offensive line issues with Rodgers’ snap count. Rodgers’ infamous snap count has been a hallmark of his career, as it has proven effective at getting defenders to jump offsides. Saleh was questioned about the offside penalties and alluded to the possibility of re-assessing the Jets snap cadence going forward. Of course, there was no way Rodgers wasn’t going to chime, responding by saying that’s one way to go about it, and the other would be to hold the offensive line accountable. OOOKKKAAAYYY. Once again, the head coach and the star quarterback appear not to be on the same page.
Senior sided with Rodgers, however, agreeing that New York should hold the offensive line accountable for their false starts rather than dialing back Rodgers’ cadence, given that they spend time in practice repping it. But what did Marshall think? After all, Newhouse was responsible for protecting Rodgers during their Green Bay days on the offensive line. Marshall too sided with his former teammate, noting that Rodgers’ cadence is considered a weapon — only the offense knows when the ball will be snapped when Rodgers does his thing. Marshall even mentions how during his time with the Packers, when Rodgers used his cadence the offense would often get free plays due to the defensive line’s lack of discipline.
Marshall took it a step further, saying that the issues with the snap count further amplify more significant problems that the organization has as a whole with communication if the head coach and the starting quarterback are not on the same page regarding accountability and discipline in two separate press conferences when we expected the Jets to be a true contender this year. Marshall notes that it’s difficult at first learning Rodgers’ cadence in practice, but once you do it repetitiously you start to understand it. He believes the offensive line needs to lock in. It remains to be seen if the Jets will resolve their communication issues and get back to playing winning football with a matchup against the surprising undefeated Vikings on deck for Week 5.
