It has been a turbulent stretch for the Phillies following the first half of the season in which they looked to be the best team in baseball. On the bright side of things, the bats have come back alive for the organization as today’s game marks the first time since 2008 the team has tallied 11 runs and 16+ hits in back-to-back games.
The Phillies got a solid start on the mound from Kolby Allard ($5,900, 12.45 FPTS) who pitched five complete innings allowing just two runs. The bats were able to take things from there and especially broke things open with a five-run eighth inning to fully put the game away.
The Phillies were surprisingly led by backup center Garrett Stubbs ($2,400, 29 FPTS) who went 4-4 on the day, falling a home run short of completing the cycle. This also marked the first time in his major league career that Stubbs had three or more hits in a game.
Kyle Schwarber ($5,600, 20.0 FPTS) tallied two hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored in his five at-bats. Nick Castellanos ($4,000, 16.0 FPTS) was responsible for breaking things open in that 8th inning with a two-run home run. It was his 17th home run of the season, trailing both Schwarber and Bryce Harper for the most on the Phillies.
Alec Bohm ($4,700, 16.0 FPTS) added two hits, three RBIs, and a run scored. Brandon Marsh ($3200, 14.0FPTS) also contributed at the bottom of the lineup going 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and adding a pair of walks.
The Royals were led in production by MJ Melendez ($3,500, 19.0 FPTS) who went 2-3 at the plate with a home run. Bobby Witt, Jr. ($6,600, 17.0 FPTS) went 2-4 at the plate with a home run as well. Witt, Jr. continues to lead the MLB in batting average and his home run today marks his 26th of the season. This ties him for the 19th-most in the MLB. Maikel Garcia ($4,400, 17.0 FPTS) also added a solo home run as well and went 2-5 at the plate.
The Phillies have now officially won the series against the Royals taking two out of three out in Kansas City. The Phillies hold a -sixgame lead in the NL East over the Atlanta Braves and sit just one game back from the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the National League.
Philadelphia still holds the third-best odds to win the World Series at +550 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. They trail only the Dodgers (+170) for the best odds to win the National League at +320 odds. They will now return home for a matchup with the Houston Astros.
Kansas City snapped a two-series winning streak and now holds a record of 72-58 on the year. They sit three games back out of AL Central and 4.5 games back in the American League race overall.
The Royals have the 12th-best odds to win the World Series at +2500 odds. They hold the 6th-best odds to win the American League at +1000 and are +425 to win the AL Central.
They will travel to Cleveland to face the Guardians next.
