Buxton left Monday’s game due to discomfort in his right hip. On Thursday, the Twins placed him on the 10-day IL despite the MRI showing no structural damage, per The Athletic’s Dan Hayes.
This is the fourth time this season that Buxton has been removed from a game due to injury. The first was a knee injury after sliding into second base. The second was a wrist injury after getting hit by a pitch. The third was a back injury after crashing into the centerfield wall.
Entering this season, Buxton had been placed on the IL 13 times, making him the Twins’ career leader. He will now add to the record books.
It’s too bad because Buxton has bounced back nicely after the last two seasons. He was slashing .275/.334/.528 with a .252 ISO and a strikeout rate of 26.6%. That number had been above 30% in each of the last two seasons. He had 16 home runs and six stolen bases in 335 plate appearances.
And it is the plate appearances that have come to define Buxton’s career. He has accrued at least 400 plate appearances just once in 10 seasons.
Over the last three games, Manuel Margot has filled in at centerfield once with Austin Martin the other two games.
