UPDATE: As expected with the initial injury timeline, Brown has officially been ruled out for the Chiefs’ season-opening contest against the Ravens.
With the veteran wideout sidelined, Kansas City’s passing attack should once again flow pretty heavily through both Travis Kelce ($9,600 Showdown) and Rashee Rice ($7,600). Rice finished his rookie campaign with 102 targets and 938 receiving yards. He was also one of only eight players to rack up over 20 targets in the red zone, which is how Rice registered seven touchdowns. If that usage trend continues in 2024, Rice will carry a massive ceiling in a high-powered aerial attack. — Garion Thorne
AUGUST 11: The defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs added Marquise “Hollywood” Brown this offseason to bolster their receiving corps. They signed the sixth-year veteran to a one-year “prove-it” deal worth seven million dollars. Unfortunately for Brown and the Chiefs, things didn’t start out well.
In his first catch of the preseason, Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation against the Jaguars on Saturday night. Here’s the tackle by Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown where the injury occurred:
After leaving the game following that catch, Brown was taken to the hospital on Saturday night according to coach Andy Reid. Reid is familiar with this kind of injury since WR Tyreek Hill had a similar injury in 2019 and was forced to miss four games. Brown is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with the injury according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, meaning Brown will likely miss the Chiefs’ season opener vs. the Ravens.
Until Brown returns, the rest of the Chiefs receivers will have more targets and a chance to start the season flying high. The Chiefs are 2.5-point favorites vs. the Ravens in Week 1, which has an over/under of 46.5 points. Brown is still on the board for an anytime touchdown in that matchup at +175.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of Brown’s injury could be rookie receiver Xavier Worthy, who replaced him in the game but did not receive a target. Worthy has yet to show much in the preseason but has lit Chiefs’ Twitter on fire with a few highlights like this one:
If Brown is out and Worthy steps up, he could end up a great late-round pick in season-long and Best Ball contests on DraftKings. Right now, Brown is currently being drafted as the No. 72 WR with an ADP of 72.5 while Worthy is WR No. 70 at an ADP of 70.9. Either receiver could be a good play in such a potent offense, especially with Rashee Rice likely facing a multi-game suspension.
