Rico Dowdle is starting to carve out a real role in Pittsburgh again. After returning in Week 6 with 10 touches, he handled 15 against New Orleans last week, catching six passes and posting 14.6 PPR points. He also out-carried Jaylen Warren inside the red zone in that game. Now the Steelers host Cleveland in a division matchup. Find out whether you should start or sit Rico Dowdle in Week 8.
Rico Dowdle Start or Sit Advice for Week 8
The trend is the encouraging part. Dowdle has gone from 10 touches and 7.9 PPR points in his return to 15 touches and 14.6 points in Week 7, and his receiving role has grown with it. He caught six passes against the Saints for 45 yards, and he now has 13 catches for 82 yards on the season.
He has also taken on more work near the goal line. Dowdle drew three red zone carries in Week 7 to Warren’s two, and he now has five on the season, matching Warren’s total. Pittsburgh has not had a clear short-yardage back this season, so that is a meaningful opening.
Cleveland gives up yards on the ground. The Browns allow 4.64 yards per carry to running backs against a league average of 4.14, along with 104.0 rushing yards per game against a league mark of 91.7. They have faced Carolina, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, the Jets, Baltimore and Tennessee, a group running 5% above league average against them, so those numbers are an honest read.
The Browns’ front is also banged up. Defensive tackles Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. and linebacker Carson Schwesinger have all been limited this week.
The Biggest Fantasy Risk for Rico Dowdle in Week 8
Warren is still the lead back. He holds 63.8% of Pittsburgh’s carries and averages 18.0 touches per game, and he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry to Dowdle’s 3.8. Warren also handled 21 touches against the Saints, so Dowdle’s bigger Week 7 role came alongside Warren’s, not at his expense.
Cleveland’s overall run defense has been tougher than the per-carry numbers suggest. The Browns allow just 19.7 PPR points per game to backs, below the league average of 22.3, and only 20.0 receiving yards per game to the position, well below the league mark of 32.4. They have also faced just 15 red zone carries all season against a league average of 25.5, so opposing backfields are not getting many chances to score. That cuts directly into both of the paths Dowdle has been using to produce.
Pittsburgh’s offense adds to the concern. The Steelers have just one rushing touchdown as a team this season and convert 47.4% of their red zone trips. Dowdle has yet to score himself, so his production depends on volume and receptions rather than touchdowns.
Fantasy Outlook for Rico Dowdle in Week 8
Sit Dowdle in Week 8, though he is close to FLEX territory. His workload is trending up, his receiving role is growing, and he has started to see real red zone work, but Warren remains the lead back and Cleveland has limited scoring chances and receiving production for running backs.
In deeper leagues, Dowdle is a reasonable FLEX for fantasy managers covering byes from the Giants, Saints, Texans and 49ers, especially in full PPR formats where his catches carry more weight. In standard leagues, he is better left on the bench until his share of the backfield grows further.
