J.D. and Turk are a bromance for the ages. They may evolve and change over time, but there is one constant — nothing and no one makes J.D. as happy as Turk does (he even said it in his wedding vows to Elliot).
But, last week’s episode asked if J.D. can be both a boss as chief of medicine and a best friend when Turk screws up and the preview for this week’s episode seems ready to ask what happens when a new person enters J.D.’s life and threatens Turk’s top spot?
Here’s a look ahead to “My Best Friend’s Birthday” and a look back at “My Chief.”

What Happened Last Time on Scrubs
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
- When J.D. became chief of medicine, it was inevitable that the position could put him into conflict with his longtime friends, Turk and Elliot. As he notes, the hardest part of his job is being responsible for his friends in a whole new way. Turk may be J.D.’s best friend, but he’s not blind to Turk’s increasing workload (or the growing presence of Turk’s head vein, Raymond). So, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when an expensive mistake that’s going to cost Sacred Heart big bucks wasn’t Amara’s fault (much to Grant’s delight) but rather Turk’s. And unfortunately, Turk doesn’t take the news well (especially when he turns to the Dark Side in J.D.’s head). Eventually, J.D. shoots straight with Turk and brings how he was burnt out when J.D. came back to Sacred Heart and between the endorphin hit of being together with each other again and all the work Turk’s taking on, the chief of surgery is just distracting himself from whatever is really bothering him. On paper Turk is golden, but it sure doesn’t feel like he is. Turk is hesitant to get help for whatever is bothering him, but it is already beginning to affect his work. But when Elliot tells Turk that the moment he stops having fun with J.D. is the moment she starts worrying about him, Turk is forced to admit J.D. was right, so he dials back his workload and agrees to talk to someone. As always, J.D. and Turk have a bond that extends beyond whatever professional or personal disagreements between them and help each other when it counts most.
- Meanwhile, Elliot wants to do more with her career, so J.D. sets her up for a meeting with a very important (i.e. very rich) board member. If you remember Elliot from the OG Scrubs at all, then you know she’s prone to getting in her own head, but once she has on her power suit it seems like she’s ready. But when a prisoner in for a foot infection says she needs to talk to her about something important, Elliot is forced to choose between a potential career-defining meeting or helping a patient in need. The patient needs Elliot’s help getting treatment for her 12-year-old son who has asthma that she can’t afford to get treated, but Elliot knows what it’s like to worry about a child so she agrees to help, even if it causes her to miss her meeting (and Tosh to get carried like a baby by Big Gina). It did make Elliot realize what her big idea is — she wants to open a mobile free clinic to help people who can’t afford the services they need. Even if their marriage didn’t last, J.D. and Elliot’s friendship remains.
- Amid all the other goings on at Sacred Heart, Amara is struggling to get people to take her seriously as a doctor. From Turk not listening to her (or even not listing to not listening to her) to Blake coming down hard and questioning whether she has what it takes to be a doctor, Amara is on the ropes. That leads to her spending time in the closet with Grant … but not in the way he wants. Despite that, he actually offers her good advice about hanging in there and finding her voice. Unfortunately for Grant, his advice works a little too well and Amara finds her voice … and authoritatively demands Blake take her out for drinks, which he responds positively to. Blake may be dead to Grant, but Amara suddenly feels alive.
- The Janitor is back! And he is once again back to tormenting J.D. The nepo baby that is Janitor’s son is not living up to his old man’s reputation for harassing J.D., so Janitor is here to help his son find his groove. But amid fears that he raised a failure, the Janitor discovers who is really to blame: J.D. and all his “loser” talk! Fatherhood hasn’t changed their conflict for the ages, so the fight continues! And Janitor gets his win in the end with Big Gina slaps the fly right off J.D.’s face … even if his son is too busy texting away to notice. A true nepo janitor, indeed.
