Survivor 51 Power Rankings: Fallout after Episode 3

Published:

By: Bryan Armetta

We’re only three episodes in, and it’s anyone’s guess as to what’ll go down next on Survivor. Season 51 has had its fair share of twists and turns, capped off by the latest blindside on Wednesday. Patt’s exit from the Toka tribe came as a shock, continuing a precedent of unexpected vote outs on Fiji. Factor in Rob’s quit due to a potential foot injury (?), and we’re already down four players from our original cast of 21.

After this week’s third episode, titled “What I’m Smellin’ Is Stinky”, which names should fans be keeping an eye on going forward? Let’s take a look at who helped, or hurt, their chances at winning Survivor 51.

Biggest Risers

Lewis

Lewis was the odd man out to start the season, getting sent to Exile Island. From there, he took Aaliyah’s place following a season-opening blindside. Finding cracks on Toka has been surprisingly easy for the Irishman. There was a clear group of five; Brady, Devin, Jelly, Mike and Patt. Being someone that’s willing to take risks, Lewis was tempted to turn against them. However, his potential flip would only guarantee a tie vote. That was too much uncertainty for such a massive early game move.

Fortunately for Lewis, help came in the form of Carter. The former Savu member, in a bit of dumb luck, found himself as the newest member of Toka after missing his boat. Even more promising, he’s in possession of what was once Rob’s hidden immunity idol. The two ‘outsiders’ were faced with a massive opportunity during this week’s vote: stick with the cool kids, or flip this tribe on its head. They opted for the latter option, potentially painting a massive target on their backs. Regardless, it’s the kind of move that an underdog such as Lewis should be making. There’s not much future for him under the erratic leadership of Devin. Creating a new majority alliance, one that is indebted to him, creates more of an opportunity to form lasting bonds. In addition, it solidified a potential partnership with Carter. Given where Lewis was two weeks prior, this is a nice turn of events.

Ori

There wasn’t a ton that happened on Savu, other than Carter’s inadvertent mutiny to Toka. Still, this week’s twist was a pivotal one for Ori. When we last saw the challenge beast, he was unable to convince close ally Sharonda to pull the trigger on an Eric vote. Still, the spit during Episode 2 doesn’t seem to have caused a major rift between the two. Even more important, there are numbers to work with on the other tribe. Devin, despite his incredibly messy gameplay (more on that later), appears like a rock-solid number. He told the two just as much during his time on Savu’s beach.

With the Helicopter Alliance still intact, Sharonda and Ori have plenty of potential allies going forward. The latter isn’t someone that’s likely to be voted off anytime soon. Beyond his obvious physical strength, Ori’s name has yet to be mentioned even in passing on Savu. It helps that Jelly found a hidden immunity idol last week, raising this quartet’s chances of making a big move down the line. Ori didn’t have the flashiest screen time by any means, but he’s being set up as a key decision maker compared to most other castaways. That bodes well for his chances at a deep run this season.

Biggest Fallers

Mike

A disastrous episode for Mike, who went from dark horse contender to a forgettable face. In Episode 1, we got plenty of content from Pinsky. He was consulted by both alliances during the Aaliyah vote, eventually joining the majority and sending her home. However, it’s one thing to display some strategic savvy. Survivor is a social game, and in that regard the Yankees executive is coming up short. There looked like a brief alliance with Maggie during Episode 1, which would be nice for Mike given her recently acquired advantage. However, we have yet to see the pair talking during the past two episodes.

It wasn’t reassuring that Mike was nearly the vote this week. If not for Thien An, who pushed hard for Patt, Pinsky would likely have gone home. He’s a clear fifth (now fourth) wheel in Devin’s alliance, likely seen as a useful number. Kilby’s group is clearly willing to cut him loose, due in part to his unwillingness to talk game with anyone. By playing it close to the vest, Mike has become one of the more untrustworthy players on Toka. It’s a stunning turn of events given how well the first vote went. There’s time to turn things around, but it’s difficult to feel good about Pinsky’s chances going forward.

Devin

The man, the myth, the legend: Devin. Beyond cockiness and a tendency to stir the pot, the Los Angeles native is simply bad at this game. His tendency to display ‘honesty’ is a liability, something that draws in and pushes away players at the same time. For the second time in three weeks, his efforts to control a vote have failed miserably. Despite pushing hard for new enemy Kilby to get sent home, it was an ally in Patt that saw her torch snuffed.

It wasn’t all bad for Devin this week. He did rekindle the Helicopter Alliance, showcasing some trust with Ori and Sharonda. In addition, the latter helped him uncover an extra vote at the Savu water well. That alone could extend Devin’s time in this game. Still, it’s impossible to ignore that he’s making enemies fast. Over half of Toka has united against him, primarily due to his social maneuvering. As previously mentioned, Pinsky doesn’t move the needle. Brady is another over-confident, abrasive player that cares more about looking like a ‘mastermind.’ Jelly could serve as a solid ally going forward, but she doesn’t even trust Devin. If that were the case, he’d know about her hidden immunity idol. At the end of the day, Devin’s hubris is the biggest obstacle in his efforts to win Survivor.
